Widow tells of plot to kill her Navy reservist husband * Monique previously 'married' to a 'transgendered person'
Monique Wheeler (Monique Berkley), one of five children in a prominent Tampa, Fla., family, moved to California in 1999 to live with a woman she met on the Internet. The move upset her parents, said her former partner, who has had surgeries to change her sex and is now a man named Markus Montgomery.  Monique excelled at a Catholic girls school, Academy of the Holy Names. She was a National Merit semifinalist and starred as Lady Macbeth in a production of "Macbeth" at an all-boys Catholic school in Tampa. She planned to attend the University of Florida and become a psychiatrist, she told a local newspaper at the time. She found Montgomery in a chatroom for gays and lesbians. The two courted in cyberspace about eight months before Monique moved to Ventura, just up the coast from Los Angeles, to be with Montgomery. On Sept. 5, 1999, at a church in Santa Paula, Calif., the couple united in a religious ceremony that, while not state-recognized, allowed the church to acknowledge them as a married couple, 
Paul Berkley started to sense his wife's infidelity after he came home, police said. He confided in his daughter that he would seek a divorce.

  Monique Berkley is charged with murdering her Navy reservist husband. Andrew Canty and Latwon Johnson, both black, also are charged in the murder. Canty and Johnson were having relationships with Monique Berkley, as well as Paul Berkley's daughter Becky, according to a family friend's blog.   Police in Raleigh said Monique Berkley told police she had planned to get her husband's insurance money. They also confirm that she was having an affair with a man who's one of the other two suspects in the killing. That black man -- Andrew Canty -- had moved into the Berkley home while Paul Berkley was deployed to Bahrain. Police said Paul Berkley had suspected that his wife was having an affair, and that he told his daughter, Becky, he planned to get a divorce. They said Becky told her evil stepmother, and that's when the plot began. Monique Berkley was ordered jailed without bond. Andrew Canty, the black man who moved in with her during her husband's deployment, and Latwon Johnson, Becky's black "boyfriend", also were denied bond.

A Cuyahoga County grand jury indicted Phillip Distasio, 34, of suburban Rocky River, on Wednesday with 40 counts of rape and other felonies. He had been charged with 34 counts in an indictment filed Sept. 30 in the attacks on two boys.

• Doctor Implicated in Nazi Atrocities Dies
  VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- Dr. Heinrich Gross, a psychiatrist who worked at a clinic where the Nazis killed and conducted cruel experiments on thousands of children, died Dec. 15, his family announced Thursday. He was 90. Gross, who proclaimed his innocence for decades, had insisted he was not present at the hospital at the time in the 1940s when most of the children were killed. He was put on trial three times, but all the cases were dismissed.
