Neighbor: Juan Threatened to Take Down Cops * Hearts heavy, police recall officer's devotion   DALLAS -- A man accused of fatally shooting a police officer had threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend and said if police became involved, he would "take them down," the woman's neighbor said.
Juan Lizcano, 28, was charged with capital murder and aggravated assault and held on $1 million bail. He was accused of fatally shooting Officer Brian Jackson during a foot chase
through alleys and between houses. Jackson, a five-year veteran, was hit once
under his right arm, near his protective vest, police said. |
Sports: UCF player suspended after sexual battery charge  Ron Ellis was arrested and charged with sexual battery in connection with a rape
allegation earlier this month, but most students just found out about the
charges this weekend.
In a student dormitory, during the early hours of November 1, UCF police said Golden Knight football player Ron Ellis sexually battered another student in her room. Other students who live in the building said police never told them about the alleged incident. - (more sports) |

Former NOPD officer arrested in Houston  A former New Orleans police officer was arrested Saturday while driving a stolen truck, authorities said. Willie Earl Bickham, 39, was expected to face felony charges including unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and impersonating a police officer, Houston police Sgt. Nate McDuell said. Bickham maintained he remained on active duty with the New Orleans agency and had worked in that capacity as recently as last week. However, New Orleans police said Bickham resigned in early September to avoid being fired for abandoning his duties during the Hurricane Katrina crisis. |

South Africa: ANC tight lipped over Zuma rape allegation Neither the police nor the ANC are ready to comment on the rape allegations levelled against Jacob Zuma, the ANC's deputy president, who stands accused of raping a 31-year-old woman.
While one newspaper report suggested the woman preferred not to talk about the alleged incident, another newspaper reported that she denied having been sexually assaulted. Sally de Beer, the national police spokesperson, said they were still gathering information. - (Africa) |

Child Enticement Arrests  Two men have been arrested and authorities have issued a warning to residents in the Botanical Garden neighborhood. Police say that men in the area have been trying to entice children.
Authorities have identified the two suspects in the latest enticement case as Aurelio Hernandez-Bernabe and Jose Andrade. They face court appearances next week but investigators believe that there are other men also trying to entice children in the area. Bancroft School officials sent a letter home to parents Friday afternoon detailing suspicious vehicles and possible threats to kids in the neighborhood. Two teenage girls were approached Thursday afternoon and the two men arrested allegedly tried to entice the girls into their car. - (reader link) Citizenship status of suspects not reported. |

Young Black Sentenced To 30 Years For Beating Death of Older White Man * Families scuffle in courtroom after verdict    TACOMA - A judge sentenced 19-year-old Andrew Brown to 30 years in prison for the brutal beating death of Darrel Johnson as families of the two men scuffled in the courtroom. Johnson, a retired Port of Tacoma maintenance electrician, was just weeks shy of his 70th birthday when he was attacked during the daily walk he takes through his east Tacoma neighborhood. He was near his home walking with the help of a cane he has used since hip replacement surgery. Witnesses said the attacker knocked Johnson to the ground, kicked him in the face, and began stomping on his head before running away. He died in the hospital one week after the attack. Police had to restrain several people after someone suggested after that the sentencing of Andrew Brown for murder was too long because the victim was 69 and not "going to live forever anyway." - (NNN Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-White) |
Predatory HIV-spreading Sex Offender Located After Missing Parole Check  PORTLAND -- A man with a history of spreading HIV through sex is back behind bars after disappearing late last month. Kenneth Miller, a convicted predatory sex offender, had been living in the Estate Hotel in Northwest Portland when he turned up missing during a routine parole check. Someone recognized Miller from a television news report and made an anonymous tip to police. The tip led police to a Salem apartment Tuesday night. Three Rochester schoolgirls raped in 1990s testify at trial * Victim of rape told 'not to scream'  The fourth victim of a serial rapist who preyed on Rochester schoolgirls a decade ago testified that her assailant knocked her to her knees as she was walking to her bus stop. "He grabbed me and stood me up," said the young woman, who was 13 when she was attacked. "He said not to scream and to stay quiet." The man forced her at knifepoint to accompany him behind a house. "He told me to take my clothes off," she said. "I didn't want to do it. He told me to do it or he was going to kill me." The woman testified in the trial of Keith Lamar Laster, 37, who is charged with raping four girls, ages 12 to 17, as they walked to their school bus stops in 1995 and 1997.- (crime) |
Katrina Couple Charged in Infant's Death  INDIANAPOLIS -- Child welfare officials apparently lost track of a Louisiana infant in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and he died after his father smashed his head into a wall, authorities said.
The boy's parents were initially charged with child neglect and aggravated battery in the Wednesday death of 4-month-old Michael Sumner III. Authorities said the couple, 21-year-old Michael D. Sumner Jr. and 20-year-old

Woman accused of starving kids pleads guilty CAMDEN, N.J. - A woman accused of severely starving her four adopted sons pleaded guilty to child endangerment, admitting she did not provide the children with proper food or medical care.
Prosecutors who signed off on the plea bargain are asking that Vanessa Jackson get seven years in prison at sentencing Feb. 10.
Jackson, 50, and her husband, Raymond Jackson, were thrust into the national spotlight in 2003 after their adopted son Bruce was found scavenging for food in a neighbor’s trash. He was 19, but from his size — 45 pounds — police figured him for about 7. |
Prichard woman accused of pimping 12-year-old girl for drugs PRICHARD, Ala. (AP) - Police have arrested a Prichard woman on charges that she worked a 12-year-old girl as a prostitute in exchange for drugs. Assistant Mobile County district attorney Steve Giardini said prosecutors decided to charge 46-year-old Cynthia Benice Fletcher with criminal complicity to second-degree rape because she induced or promoted the sexual act. Giardini said the girl was raped at least one time this year by a man whom authorities have not yet arrested. He said the department of Human Resources has safely placed her. - (Tyrone N.
