  YAKIMA, Wash. -- The state reached a settlement Thursday with a California labor contractor accused of violating wage and labor rules by bringing temporary farm workers from Thailand to the Yakima Valley last year. The announcement came a day after farmworker advocates urged Gov. Christine Gregoire to bar Global Horizons of Los Angeles from operating in Washington state. The company has brought in more than 100 temporary agricultural workers each of the past two summers under a federal program that allows a labor contractor to bring in foreign workers if it can prove workers cannot be found locally. Company president Mordechai Orian did not return a telephone message.

  SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A man already being held on charges of lying to authorities about attending a terrorist training camp in Pakistan has been indicted on federal charges alleging he intended "to wage jihad in the United States." Thursday's indictment accuses Hamid Hayat, 23, of providing material support to terrorists, the most serious charge that could be filed absent an actual terrorist act, prosecutors said.

  Samantha Lewthwaite told The Sun newspaper that her husband, Jermaine Lindsay, had been visiting mosques in London, Luton and northern England.  "How these people could have turned him and poisoned his mind is dreadful," she was quoted as saying. "He was an innocent, naive and simple man. I suppose he must have been an ideal candidate." Lindsay is suspected of detonating the bomb that killed 26 people and himself on the Piccadilly Underground line on July 7. In all, four attacks on the transit system that day killed 52 passengers and four bombers.  Lewthwaite, 21, and Lindsay, 19, both converted to Islam. She gave birth to the couple's second child, a daughter, on July 22 just 15 days after the bombings. The couple also had a son, now 17 months old. - (UK)

  A man who sought safety from Hurricane Katrina in Tennessee was gunned down in the street and died, possibly during a robbery of his Red Cross relief money. Don Maurice Airline, 24, of Metairie, La., was found on a secluded road with five gunshots to his head. Days before he was killed last week, the Red Cross gave him a debit card worth several hundred dollars.  Her son had left a Chattanooga nightclub with at least two men and a woman hours before his body was spotted early Saturday on a weedy roadside in south Chattanooga.

  Robert Cook's home was used as a place where, through Human Services, the courts sent troubled youths. Some of the teenage boys who lived at the home were convicted sex offenders. Cook ran the home for nearly 20 years until he was arrested in Fort Collins on charges of soliciting a 17-year-old male for prostitution. "Sexual things [happened] to the boys. My mom almost adopted one to get him away from there, but he ended up moving away," said Melinda Byrnes, a neighbor. - (Brewski)

Krugel, who is reported to be a follower of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, told the court he was remorseful and is a changed person but the court nevertheless decided to impose the maximum sentence.

They should have held him knowing he had threatened my daughter and her sister. They should have had a cop or something patrolling there, but they didn't."  Katie's grandmother said Katie had confronted Keeling, her next-door neighbor, about allegedly molesting his stepdaughter, who was Katie's best friend.
