    Indicted ex-official distraught over online story committed suicide
Arthur E. Teele JrMIAMI (AP) — A former city commissioner who committed suicide was distraught about an online story that detailed his alleged contacts with drug dealers, reputed homosexual affairs and the corruption charges he faced, acquaintances said Thursday. Arthur E. Teele Jr. killed himself Wednesday in the lobby of The Miami Herald after asking to speak with columnist Jim DeFede.     Mom Sentenced After Son Shoots Mailman
Latoya Burnette,Clayton SmithLatoya Burnette, tThe mother of a 9-year-old boy who "accidentally" shot and killed Clayton Smith, a White postal carrier was sentenced Friday to 18 months in prison for illegally owning a gun and lying to federal authorities. Latoya Burnette, 31, of Butner, N.C., tearfully apologized and asked for lenience, saying her son and two daughters needed her at home. "I'm very, very sorry," Burnette said. Jeremy RourkeThe black 13-year-old boy who killed Jeremy Rourke with a baseball bat after a Pony League game was ordered Thursday to a youth detention center until he turns 25. A lawyer had argued that his client was acting in self-defense. The defendant is black and Jeremy was white, but the lawyer said "he did not believe the incident was racially motivated". - ( Another Angry White) - (black-on-white)


    Sports: Suspect in alleged BYU rape is investigated in Texas case
 B.J. Mathis PROVO, Utah – One of four former Brigham Young University footballers accused of gang-raping a 17-year-old girl in Provo last year is being investigated in a possible sexual assault in Texas. The Garland Police Department in Texas said it found evidence that could link B.J. Mathis to an apartment where a woman said she was assaulted. The woman told police "a young African-American male forced her to perform oral sex upon him in her bedroom soon after she returned home." A dog tag with Mathis' name and Social Security number on it was found in the woman's bed. Semen found at the scene has been sent to the Texas crime lab. - (Brewski) - (more sports)

    Martinez executed for hike-and-bike trail murder
David MartinezHUNTSVILLE — When she last spoke with her sister, 24-year-old Kiersa Paul said she was heading out on her bicycle to a popular Austin park to meet a guy she felt sorry for and knew only as "Wolf." The predator nickname turned out prophetic. The next morning, Paul was found dead. She'd been raped, strangled, her throat cut at least eight times and an "X" etched into her chest. David Martinez, known as Wolf, was arrested days after the 1997 slaying. Travis County jurors deliberated only 15 minutes before convicting him of capital murder. Two weeks later, they decided he should be put to death.

 
  • ICE nets 20 arrests during 3-day operation
    Manuel Cesar Garcia, a Peruvian national was convicted on four counts of lewd and lascivious assault on a child
    and three counts of sexual battery. Those arrested represent 12 different countries including Nicaragua, Mexico, Peru, Honduras, Vietnam, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti, El Salvador, Bahamas and Jamaica. They had criminal histories ranging from drug possession and aggravated assault to drug trafficking and battery with a deadly weapon.
  • Divided Over Immigration
    On one side of the fence are the nativist conservatives who raise the alarm about hordes of foreigners invading our nation. Since 9/11, national security has been their rallying cry for restrictions on immigration, but their fear of immigrants' alleged criminality, welfare dependency, "bad character" and refusal to assimilate go back much further. On the other side are the pro-business conservatives who insist that our economy needs the cheap labor provided by illegal immigrants. - (Invasion!)

    PHOENIX -- Two local law enforcement agencies have launched special units devoted to fighting migrant smuggling, an unusual move given that immigration has long been the province of the federal government.
  • "Hispanics new target of so-called hate-groups"
    Former Klansman Daniel Schertz, a 27-year-old from the southeast Tennessee town of South Pittsburg, was indicted in June on charges of building pipe bombs to kill Hispanic immigrants.

    Woman's Killing in N.Y. Now Hate Crime
Phillip GrantWHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The fatal stabbing of a 56-year-old woman at a mall will be prosecuted as a hate crime because the suspect said he wanted to kill a white person, authorities said Tuesday. Phillip Grant, 43, who is black, was indicted Tuesday on charges of murder, murder as a hate crime, and possession of a weapon. The June 29 slaying of Concetta Russo-Carriero took place in the parking garage of the Galleria Mall in White Plains. If convicted of murder as a hate crime, the minimum sentence would be 20 years to life instead of 15 years to life, prosecutors said. - (hatecrimes)

    Ramirez To Be Charged With Officer's Shooting Death
Irving Ramirez will be formally charged for the shooting death of San Leandro Police Officer Dan Niemi, who was shot while on patrol. His family say they're demanding justice. Neimi's brother said the voice of victims must be heard. Niemi's widow Dionne Niemi expressed gratitude to the people who helped police catch her husband's alleged killer. . A funeral for Niemi is set for Monday, at the Three Crosses Church in Castro Valley.

    Virginia Beach Man Sentenced for Abducting, Raping Exotic Dancer
Sean Omar Wilmont A man who abducted and raped an exotic dancer last year will spend the next ten years in prison. Wednesday a Virginia Beach judge sentenced Sean Omar Wilmont to 30 years behind bars, but suspended twenty. Police say the 23-year-old sailor abducted and raped an exotic dancer on Christmas Eve at a residence in the 5500 block of Magnolia Circle. Police say he threatened to kill the victim if she did not comply. - (Tyrone N. Butts)- (TNB) - (crime)


    Suspected Serial Rapist Arrested, Accused Of Targeting Prostitutes
Milton Boston Jr.Police have arrested a suspected serial rapist who they said preyed on prostitutes. Milton Boston Jr. faces 25 charges, including sexual battery, aggravated assault, kidnapping and robbery, in connection with 13 sexual assaults. " Milton Boston, targeted women, predominately with a history of prostitution," Bowen said. "They typically would be walking in the street and he would engage them in some form of communication. At some point, some of the women would enter into a vehicle with Boston, and then he would strangle the victim to the point of unconsciousness." - (crime) - (Rasp)

    Police officer facing charge of sexual assault on 14-year-old
Harry Lee TuckerA Bowman police officer was arrested and charged with assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct in connection with an incident involving a 14-year-old girl. Harry Lee Tucker, 38, was arrested and is being held. According to an affidavit, Tucker took the girl "against her will by force and threat of authority," and "did transport the minor ... to an area where the minor had no recourse but to do as the officer instructed." Documents further allege that while on a dirt road off Kizer Road in Bowman, Tucker "fondle(d) the victim's breasts and pulled her pants to her knees." - (Aryan Barbarian, Tyrone) - (crime)
