  SAN FRANCISCO -- Accusations against an attorney who worked on a federal case in which black farmers claimed the government denied them loans because of their race could affect the landmark civil rights settlement.   Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said he will sign each letter written to family members of service members killed in military action.
  As of early Sunday, the number of U.S. troop deaths in the Iraqi war is 1,308. Operation Enduring Freedom, which includes Afghanistan and other countries, has resulted in 153 U.S. deaths.

• Black teens target Haitian migrants in Florida - may be charged with hate crimes
  Two non-Haitian black teens will spend Christmas behind bars after thinking that a language barrier would keep their Haitian robbery victims from going to the police, officials said.   RALEIGH, N.C. -- A bi-sexual Mexican migrant National Guardsman plead guilty to killing a gay 17-year-old Iraqi soldier who he shot after they had consensual sex in a guard tower while on duty.. Pvt. Federico Daniel Merida, 21, pleaded guilty to murder without premeditation and other charges during a court-martial in Iraq. Merida and the Iraqi were on guard duty in a tower of an Army camp near Tikrit in northern Iraq. Merida shot the teen 11 times with his carbine. Merida first told investigators the teen demanded money at gunpoint. Later, he said he killed the boy because he forced him to have sex. In a third interview, Merida said he got angry after the two had consensual sex.
  Merida, who was born in Veracruz, Mexico, has a wife and toddler son. He is confined at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

  U.S. immigration officials said that more than 18,000 military members applied for expedited naturalization, and about 9,000 applicants have become citizens. The new citizens came from places including American Samoa, Mexico, Vietnam, the Philippines and Western Samoa.

• UPDATE: Gay Mexican cannibal kills, grills lover for breakfast
  A Mexican man killed his lover in a drunken, drugged fight then cooked the man's body in tomato and onion sauce and ate it over three days. Police found Gumaro de Dios Arias grilling rotting human flesh for his breakfast, including part of a heart, when they raided a shack he lived in near the Caribbean beach resort of Playa del Carmen, a police chief said. "He was preparing stews. There was a grill where he was cooking part of the heart and bits he had cut off the body. It was terrible, terrible," said local police chief Martin Estrada, who was among a dozen police who raided the shack. Arias told police the victim, a young man, arrived at his cardboard hut in a wasteland area with a mutual friend who then left the two of them drinking and taking drugs. The pair had sex and afterward a fight broke out during which he killed the man with blows to the head.

• An American woman and her Mexican husband who said they were tortured by police and forced to confess
  to killing a Mexican girl were acquitted Friday of the murder charges. Bloomington, Minn. native Cynthia Kiecker and her husband Ulysis Perzabal spent more than 1 1/2 years in jail while on trial for the May 2003 slaying of 16-year-old Viviana Rayas.

• Illegal migrant smuggling case lawyer for black suspect 'Tyrone' plays 'race card'

• Nearly Half in U.S. Say Restrict Muslims
  Nearly half of all Americans believe the U.S. government should restrict the civil liberties of Muslim Americans, according to a nationwide poll.
  The survey conducted by Cornell University also found that Republicans and people who described themselves as highly religious were more apt to support curtailing Muslims' civil liberties than Democrats or people who are less religious.
