  RALEIGH, N.C. -- A bi-sexual Mexican migrant National Guardsman plead guilty to killing a gay 17-year-old Iraqi soldier who he shot after they had consensual sex in a guard tower while on duty.. Pvt. Federico Daniel Merida, 21, pleaded guilty to murder without premeditation and other charges during a court-martial in Iraq. Merida and the Iraqi were on guard duty in a tower of an Army camp near Tikrit in northern Iraq. Merida shot the teen 11 times with his carbine. Merida first told investigators the teen demanded money at gunpoint. Later, he said he killed the boy because he forced him to have sex. In a third interview, Merida said he got angry after the two had consensual sex.
  Merida, who was born in Veracruz, Mexico, has a wife and toddler son. He is confined at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

  U.S. immigration officials said that more than 18,000 military members applied for expedited naturalization, and about 9,000 applicants have become citizens. The new citizens came from places including American Samoa, Mexico, Vietnam, the Philippines and Western Samoa.

  A Mexican man killed his lover in a drunken, drugged fight then cooked the man's body in tomato and onion sauce and ate it over three days. Police found Gumaro de Dios Arias grilling rotting human flesh for his breakfast, including part of a heart, when they raided a shack he lived in near the Caribbean beach resort of Playa del Carmen, a police chief said. "He was preparing stews. There was a grill where he was cooking part of the heart and bits he had cut off the body. It was terrible, terrible," said local police chief Martin Estrada, who was among a dozen police who raided the shack. Arias told police the victim, a young man, arrived at his cardboard hut in a wasteland area with a mutual friend who then left the two of them drinking and taking drugs. The pair had sex and afterward a fight broke out during which he killed the man with blows to the head.

  to killing a Mexican girl were acquitted Friday of the murder charges. Bloomington, Minn. native Cynthia Kiecker and her husband Ulysis Perzabal spent more than 1 1/2 years in jail while on trial for the May 2003 slaying of 16-year-old Viviana Rayas.

  Something began happening to Jack Colin in 1983 that terrified his new wife. Once gentle, he became prone to fits of rage. He started stockpiling guns and knives. Later, when police searched his home, they found books on bondage, photo of Colin in women's clothing and a diary describing ways to mutilate women. "He began projecting this hatred towards me, coming out with screams of `You're just like my mother. Mother, Mother, Mother!'" Lori Colin once wrote in a letter to a judge. It was not until she left him that she learned what the comparison meant. In 1972, at age 19, Colin shot and stabbed his parents to death in their home near Pittsburgh. Acquitted by reason of insanity, he spent several years in a mental hospital. Investigators this week searched his New Jersey home for evidence linking him to the disappearances of three suburban Philadelphia women in late 1983 and early 1984, including two who were dismembered.

  HOUSTON -- The lawyer for a man accused of abandoning a truck crammed with illegal immigrants in a deadly smuggling attempt claims the driver is being "singled out for the death penalty because he is black". Judge Vanessa Gilmore asked Assistant U.S. Attorney Tony Roberts to provide her a letter from Attorney General John Ashcroft explaining his office's refusal to "disclose why you sought the death penalty on this guy, the only black guy, and not on the others." Truck driver Tyrone Williams, 33, of Schenectady, N.Y., is accused of abandoning a trailer crammed with illegal immigrants traveling across Texas in the stifling heat; 17 bodies were found inside the trailer and two others died later.

  The case against Demjanjuk was first brought in 1977, when he was accused of being one "Ivan the Terrible," a Nazi guard at the Treblinka death camp in Poland in 1942 and 1943. Demjanjuk's citizenship was stripped in 1981 and he was deported to Israel, where he was found guilty of war crimes and sentenced to death. However Demjanjuk was set free when evidence of a mistaken identity emerged.

• Ala. Court Won't Vacate Conviction of Dead Klansman
  MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- A state appeals court Friday refused to vacate the murder conviction of ex-Klansman Bobby Frank Cherry, who died while serving a life term for the deaths of four black girls in a 1963 Birmingham church bombing. Cherry's attorney had asked the Court of Criminal Appeals to vacate the conviction under a rule that allows such action if a defendant dies during an appeal. The appeals court rejected the motion, saying it had already turned down Cherry's appeal and therefore the rule did not apply. Cherry, who suffered from cancer, died last month at age 74 while his lawyer was seeking a rehearing.
