Atlanta's Charismatic Black Ex-Mayor Faces Probe ATLANTA -- Former Mayor Bill Campbell, who presided over Atlanta during its most prosperous period in recent history, a span that included the 1996 Olympics, is returning to defend himself and his administration in a federal corruption trial.
Campbell is accused of accepting more than $160,000 in illegal campaign contributions, cash, junkets and home improvements in exchange for city contracts. The 52-year-old charismatic ex-politician -- once considered a rising star in the national Democratic Party -- is charged with seven counts of racketeering, fraud and bribery. - (Newsroom) - (TNB) |

Criminal Diversity: Two murder suspects captured after jailbreak Alabama (CNN) -- Police found two murder suspects at a motel in Columbus, Georgia, three days after their escape from jail, an Alabama sheriff said.
Johnny Earl Jones, 17, and Lamar Benton, 19, escaped from the county jail in Phenix City after overpowering a guard early Saturday. They stabbed him 15 times in the back with a "shank," Russell County Sheriff Tommy Boswell said. Boswell described it as"a crude weapon made out of sharp wire." Jones is charged in connection with the death of a child he was babysitting, and Benton is charged in the rape and slaying of a 39-year-old woman. |

Rwandan rebel convicted of butchering 9 English-speaking gorilla tourists to death with clubs and machetes  A former Rwandan soldier has been given a 15-year jail term for the murder of eight western "gorilla tourists" and a game warden in a Ugandan park in 1999.
The judge spared Jean Paul Bizimana, 32, the death sentence, saying some of the tourists' home-countries view capital punishment as "abhorrent".
He was among Rwandan rebels who abducted 14 tourists and their guide as they tracked rare mountain gorillas.
The tourists were from the US, the UK and New Zealand. Four Britons as well as two Americans, two New Zealanders and a Ugandan game warden, were bludgeoned to death with axes and machetes in the attack. The victims were Americans Rob Haubner and his wife, Susan Miller, of Portland, Ore.; Rhonda Avis, 27, and Michelle Strathern, 26, from New Zealand; Britons Martin Friend, 24, Steven Robert, 27 and Mark Lindgren, 23, and Joanne Cotton, a driver for the London-based outfitter that organized trips to Africa, and Ugandan guide Ross Wagaba. Stabbing Suspect "Smoke" Back in Luzerne County A 16 year old is back in Wilkes-Barre, charged with killing a police informant during a drug buy. Investigators caught him over the weekend in Philadelphia. Police said Joshua Bradshaw took off for Philadelphia after the murder last week.
He may be 16, but investigators said he stabbed police informant Kevin D'Souza 20 times in only a minute last Tuesday.
Bradshaw, or "Smoke" as he's called, was the target of a police drug investigation. - (crime) - (Newsroom) |
Suspect Arrested In Harnett County Drive-By Shooting - Teacher Was Not Intended Target, Investigators Say   N.C. -- Authorities have arrested one suspect in connection with a drive-by shooting that paralyzed a teacher three months ago, but another suspect is still on the run.
County sheriff's investigators arrested James Arthur Judd, 20, and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with the intent to kill. Warrants were also issued for Milton Terrell “Tookie” Matthews, 20. The paralyzed teach Patterson was lying in bed on the evening of Oct. 11 when several shots were fired into her residence. One bullet hit Patterson in her upper body and left her paralyzed from the waist down. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
"White" Female Police Officer Arrested For Grabbing, Pushing Son DeKalb County police officer Patricia Ann White is on the other side of the law after officials say she was arrested for battery. Police say Officer White was arrested for allegedly battering her 15-year-old son. White admitted to grabbing and pushing her son after she had two beers. Chief Louis Graham says at least 37 officers have been involved in domestic violence related crimes in the past three years. "She was trying to discipline her son--a 15-year-old--he was not obeying her orders or commands at which time a struggle ensued," ...She grabbed him, pushed him down or threw him down to the sofa at which time other people inside the residence got involved and DeKalb police responded." - (Newsroom) |
"Man's racist slurs prompt time in black churches"- Black judge gave White man a choice: Go to jail or go to a black church  The Anderson Township man, convicted of disorderly conduct, immediately chose six weeks of Sunday worship over 30 days in the Hamilton County Justice Center.
But there’s a catch. Brett Haines, who was accused of using racial slurs and threatening a black cab driver, must attend services at any one of Cincinnati’s predominantly African-American churches. “It seems readily apparent to me that you don’t like black people,” Judge William Mallory Jr. told Haines. “That’s OK with me. Bishop Apologizes for Handling of Killer Roman Catholic Priest Wis. -- A Roman Catholic bishop apologized Sunday for the way the diocese handled complaints about a late priest who is believed to have later killed two funeral home workers. A Wisconsin judge ruled that the Rev. Ryan Erickson almost certainly shot to death funeral home director Dan O'Connell, 39, and employee James Ellison, 22, in 2002.
