  MADRID, Spain (AP) -- A Spanish judge has jailed seven people accused of recruiting fighters for the Iraqi insurgency, judicial officials said. The recruits allegedly included an Algerian believed to have killed 19 Italians in a suicide attack against a military base in November 2003.

• Luis Gustavo in jail, cCharged with kidnap and rape of 13-year-old girl
  A Salt Lake City man is in trouble with the law after picking up a 13-year old girl and having sex with her. The man also faces kidnapping charges. Police say the two met in Salt Lake, but the man drove the girl to a Motel 6 in Woods Cross. It happened last September, but the girl's mother found out about it and called police. Police say 30-year old Luis Gustavo met the girl on a Salt Lake City street corner. She told him she needed a place to stay. Police say Gustavo took the girl to the motel in Woods Cross. The teen told investigators they had sex. Citizenship status of suspect not reported.

  A woman was attacked Friday afternoon in her  home by a man, police say, who was attempting to rape her. The attacker entered the home  through a sliding glass door about 1:20 p.m. After a struggle, the suspect ran off. The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
  The suspect was described as Latino in his late 20s, with tatoos on both arms, including a web tatoo on the left elbow and a tatoo with stylized writing on the neck. He was said to have slicked-back black hair, and is believed to be about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing about 150 pounds. Black 13-year-old could get life for rape of little 6-year-old girl
Authorities charged 13-year-old Sherman Burnett Jr. with felonies that could result in life sentences now that he is certified for adult trial in a brutal sexual assault of a girl half his age in Spanish Lake. In a probable cause statement accompanying the warrants, St. Louis County police accused Burnett of punching, kicking, stomping and choking the 6-year-old victim. A police officer found her in woods behind her home on Nov. 12, about 11 hours after she was reported missing. A judge ruled that Burnett should be tried as an adult. That cleared the way for the filing of charges of child kidnapping, first-degree assault and forcible sodomy. All carry possible life terms. If convicted as a juvenile, Burnett could have been held only until age 21. - (crime)

LAST November, on the orders of Paul Boateng, Britain’s envoy to South Africa, the high commission in Pretoria was tied with a symbolic giant ribbon in honour of the African National Congress government’s “16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children”. This jumbo-sized salute to the ANC’s campaign against abuses of women compounded the embarrassment last week when Boateng’s 21-year-old son Benjamin was accused of twice raping a girl aged 17, first in an alleyway and then on a beach. - (NNN Newsroom) - (Africa) - (UK)

Jury Deliberating Niles Scott Rape Case - Man Accused Of Raping 12-Year-Old Niece
CLEVELAND -- The case of a child rape suspect has been handed over to a jury for deliberation. Niles Scott is accused of raping his 13-year-old niece.  He was a fugitive living in Belize until Oprah Winfrey profiled him and other accused sexual predators on one of her shows. A viewer recognized him, and he was arrested by authorities in October. The jury got the case shortly before 4 p.m. Friday. A 12-year-old girl claimed he forced her to undress and have sexual intercourse

Black Miss. school superintendent is accused of rape
Quitman County School Superintendent Valmadge Towner is accused of raping a district employee. According to an affadavit, the alleged victim says Superintendent Towner dragged her into his office and forced her to have sex. She told a court officer the rape happened Sept. 15. A warrant shows Towner was arrested almost one month later on Oct. 12.

  WASHINGTON -- Most Americans believe there has been significant progress in achieving Martin Luther King Jr.'s "dream" of "racial equality", though blacks are more skeptical, an AP-Ipsos poll found. Racial integration has swept across much of American life and blacks have gained economic ground since the height of the civil rights movement. Two decades ago, the government established a federal holiday in honor of the slain civil rights leader. On some measures such as annual income, blacks have closed the gap considerably with whites over the past few decades, census figures show. The progress for blacks may have stalled, however, and some even fear a possible backlash. Three-quarters of those surveyed say there has been significant progress on achieving King's dream. But only 66 percent of blacks felt that way.
  
  A lot of whites basically say: 'The civil rights movement has been done. I don't want to hear about it anymore.'" Some say the "(black) civil rights" movement (riots) sparked a backlash that could reverse gains. Accusations that King committed adultery and plagiarized material in academic writings emerged in the years after the holiday was established.   HARTFORD, Conn. -- The bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut on Saturday removed a priest from his duties in a clash over the elevation of a gay bishop in New Hampshire. Connecticut Bishop Andrew D. Smith stripped Mark H. Hansen, formerly of St. John's Church in Bristol, "of the right to exercise the office of priest in the Episcopal church." Smith had "inhibited," or suspended Hansen six months earlier.

Attorney David DeFazio said his client Peggy Jo Conner suffers from "severe mental disorders, including but not limited to psychosis and schizophrenia" and that an insanity defense would be offered.

About 40 cars set off from the park after midnight, heading for Cronulla and Maroubra. They moved in a large convoy, hazard lights on as a show of force. During the next three hours, across Cronulla, Maroubra and Brighton-le-Sands, between one and two hundred young Lebanese men smashed scores of cars, stabbed or bashed several people and threatened a number of women with rape.

True to their self-image as the "Lions of Lebanon", the hardest of the hard on Sydney's streets, not one of these men was arrested or even hindered by police in their self-styled intifada that night.

One month later, 14 people have been arrested for their roles in the anti-Lebanese violence at Cronulla and a Lebanese immigrant has been jailed for three months for burning the Australian flag at the Brighton-le-Sands RSL club in front of about 150 people on the night of the Cronulla demonstration. Soft targets. As for the far more sinister event, the large-scale, co-ordinated, premeditated attacks on scores of people and cars, not a single arrest has been made.

This was not the first such embarrassment of the police in the face of belligerent swarms of young Lebanese men. A retired detective, Tim Priest, in a lecture delivered exactly two years before the Cronulla riot, said:

"In hundreds upon hundreds of incidents police have backed down to Middle Eastern thugs and taken no action and allowed incidents to go unpunished. I stress the unbelievable influence that local politicians and religious leaders played in covering up the real state of play in the south-west … My prediction is that within 10 years there will be no-go areas in south-western Sydney, just like Paris." - (reader link)
