  • Police chief suspended for making a racial slur about people of Vietnamese heritage
    Jimmy FawcettVietcongChief Jimmy Fawcett is a 32-year department veteran and has been chief for 15 years. He had an unblemished record before the incident, the city said.   Before beginning his law enforcement career in Sherman in 1971, he served in the Navy for four years, including assignments in Vietnam, Japan, the Philippines and Korea, according to his biography. Chief Fawcett is also fifth vice president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and is slated to become president in 2010. He holds a Master Certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education, a bachelor's degree from Abilene Christian University and an associate degree from Grayson County Junior College. - (Dr William Pierce)

  • Ohio Imam Fawaz Damra Tied to Terrorists to Leave U.S.
    Fawaz DamraDETROIT — A Cleveland imam convicted of hiding terrorist ties has agreed to leave the United States, ending his deportation case, his attorney and government officials said Thursday. Fawaz Damra, spiritual leader of the Islamic Center of Cleveland, is Palestinian-born. He was convicted in 2004 of concealing ties to alleged terrorist groups when he applied for U.S. citizenship in 1994. He served two months in prison and lost his U.S. citizenship.

    PARIS -- A gang of more than 20 youths -- thought to be North African immigrants -- terrorized hundreds of train passengers in a rampage of violence, robbery and sexual assault on New Year's Day,  The five-hour-long criminal frenzy was "totally unacceptable," French President Jacques Chirac told reporters. "Those guilty will be found and punished, as they deserve." The gang of between 20 and 30 youths boarded the train, heading from Nice on the French Riviera to Lyon, in eastern France, early on Jan. 1, as it carried 600 passengers home from New Year's Eve partying overnight. Once inside, they went wild, forcing passengers to hand over mobile phones and wallets, and slashing seats and breaking windows.

  • Norway: Camel project stirs a fuss
    The refugee council (Flyktningtjenesten) wants to launch production of camel milk, a project it thinks will benefit refugees from African countries who miss the milk and need jobs. "Camels don't belong in Norway," Sondre Båtstrand, spokesman for environmental group Grønn Ungdom said earlier this week.  - (NNN Newsroom)

    Black US sailor admits to killing local woman outside Tokyo
A 21-year-old US navy sailor has admitted to killing a local woman near Tokyo, in a case likely to reignite controversy over the American military presence in Japan, police said.   Japanese investigators spoke to the serviceman at a US naval base in Yokosuka, at the mouth of Tokyo Bay, where he has been put in confinement, a media relations official at Kanagawa prefectural police said. "The suspect has basically admitted to the murder when he spoke during the voluntary questioning," the official said, adding that the suspect is a black male crew member of the Yokosuka-based US aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. - (-88-) - (crime)

    Registered Sex Offender Charged With Brutal Assault - poured boiling water from a tea kettle over the victim's genitals
William JohnsonCHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A registered sex offender has been charged with the brutal sexual assault of a woman who was at his home to take care of him  William Johnson, 55, attacked his caregiver at his home. The victim said the assault happened several weeks ago, but she was too scared to come forward until now. Neighbors said they only knew Johnson as "the nice old man". According to the police search warrant, Johnson forced his caregiver into his home, tied her up and brutally sexually assaulted a woman. The warrant said Johnson then poured boiling water from a tea kettle over the victim's genitals. - (Rasp) - (crime) 

    Man's face comes back to haunt victim of rape

When she closed her eyes and thought back to that November morning eight years ago, all she could see was her rapist's blood-shot eyes looking down at her. And as the former University of Florida student, who was raped in 1997, scanned through the mugs of a photo lineup, one face besieged her. "When I looked at each image in the photo array, I had this sick feeling in my stomach when my eyes landed on his face," The face that haunted her belonged to Leo Price Jr., a 52-year-old Gainesville man who was arrested Tuesday on charges of sexual battery, attempted murder and armed burglary. Price was linked to the rape after investigators with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement matched his DNA obtained after an unrelated drug arrest to the 1997 rape. - (-88-) - (crime)

    Officials Warn Of Convicted Rapist, Murderer Living In Jacksonville * Serial rapist who killed Lake Park victim set free
Raymond BerryFla. -- A rapist and murder just released from 20 years in prison has settled in Jacksonville, and authorities in South Florida called a news conference to warn people that they believe he is still dangerous. Raymond Berry, 55, was convicted of the rape and murder of an antique-shop owner in West Palm Beach in 1984. He also served time for an armed robbery in Duval County in 1975 and an aggravated battery in Volusia County in 1979. His first criminal conviction on file was for a rape in Daytona Beach in 1968, when he was only 17.  - (-88-) - (crime)

    Man Convicted In 1994 Rape of a  71-year-old woman

CINCINNATI -- A Walnut Hills man has been convicted of raping a woman at her Kenwood home more than 10 years ago, officials said. DNA evidence connected Keith Hawkins to the rape of a then 71-year-old woman on July 17, 1994. Hawkins allegedly climbed through a second-story window, tied the victim with a phone cord, threatened her with a knife and raped her. He also took money and other property. If convicted, Hawkins faces up to 50 years in prison. - (NNN Newsroom) - (crime)

A Slocomb man sits behind bars charged with first degree burglary and first degree rape. Dothan Police arrested Darriek Smith in connection with the incident which occurred on New Year’s Eve. Investigators say Smith allegedly broke into the home of his ex-girlfriend and forced her to have sex with him.   Witnesses who visited the victim's home alerted police, and when officers got there, Smith took off on foot. Police chased him down. - (Negrodamus) - (crime)

 

 
  • Roman Catholic Priest, accused of homosexually abusing boy, resigns from Indiana church
    MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) -- A Roman Catholic priest accused of sexual misconduct in Orlando, Fla., has resigned his position with a northwestern Indiana church. The Rev. Richard Emerson resigned from Notre Dame Parish in Michigan City more than a year after accusations were first made that Emerson, 53, had repeatedly molested a boy, now 29, while Emerson was on temporary assignment in Orlando between 1986 and 1991.

  • Judge Rejects Bail Bond in Terror Probe
    SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A federal judge rejected bail for a father involved in a terrorism probe with his son, finding that his relatives could not properly post his $1.2 million bond. Three of Umer Hayat's relatives offered their property as insurance that he would not flee if released. His son, 23-year-old Hamid Hayat,  faces charges of supporting terrorism and lying to investigators. He is being held without bail.

  • Fla. Woman Alejandra Carvajal Accused of Aiding Escaped Inmate
    Reynaldo E. RapaloMIAMI -- A woman accused of providing food, money and clothing to a serial rape suspect after his escape from jail has been arrested, police said Wednesday.  Alejandra Carvajal, 45, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to capital sexual battery. She went to Reynaldo E. Rapalo's hiding place in Miami a day after he escaped from jail.  He had been awaiting a February trial on sexual battery and other charges that could send him to prison for life. He is accused of sexually assaulting seven women and girls, ranging in age from 11 to 79. - (crime) - (José María) - (Invasion!)

    Va. Man Charged With Killing Mormon Missionary

YoungA man was charged with killing a Mormon missionary and wounding another in a shooting that police believe occurred because the victims had witnessed a crime while they were discussing their religion door-to-door. James Rickey Boughton Jr., 19, was arrested  at his home. Elder Morgan W. Young, 21, from Bountiful, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Doctors treated him, but Young's injuries were too severe. He died early this morning.   Joshua Heidbrink, 19,  was shot in the neck and collarbone. - (NNN Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-White)    

   

Black Las Vegas man gets 20 years to life in slaying of White Utah tourist

A Nevada man was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for bludgeoning a Utah tourist to death in 2003.

r, 28, received the maximum sentence for his Nov. 9 conviction for second-degree murder with a deadly weapon in the slaying of Simone Hirst. Hirst, a former model from Park City, Utah, was killed April 2003 after trading sex with strangers for crack cocaine at a low-budget motel in downtown Las Vegas.  Testimony in court showed she quarreled with her boyfriend while celebrating her 39th birthday and took a taxi alone from the posh Bellagio hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip to one of the roughest sections of town.   DNA evidence showed Walker had sex with Hirst, and a witness saw the two together in the motel courtyard where prosecutors said Hirst was killed with a 44-pound rock.

Man convicted of killing Utah tourist sentenced to life in prison
- This morning the emotional parents of his victim, Simone Hirst, took the stand. Her mom held up her daughter's remains showing the jury all that she had left of her child. Hirst's father told Walker he's an angry old man trying to deal with his daughter being brutally taken away from him. "You're a coward; you're not a man at all. You've devastated my family and you've hurt your family the same way," he said.


 

 
  • Okla. Pastor Arrested on Lewdness Charge for propositioning a male undercover officer
    A pastor who has spoken out against homosexuality was arrested after propositioning a male undercover police officer outside a hotel, authorities said.   As the Rev. Lonnie Latham, 59, left jail he said "I was set up. I was in the area pastoring to police." Latham, a member of the Southern Baptist Convention's executive committee, was arrested Tuesday and charged with offering to engage in an act of lewdness.
