Three Arrested In Connection With Slayings, Robberies * Killing meant to silence woman Indianapolis police said they arrested three men in connection with eight armed robberies that left three people dead -- including a woman who police say was involved in the spree -- and six others injured. Police said they arrested Gabriel Jordan, 25, and two other men Sunday. Jordan is a suspect in the shooting death of Vanessa Hankins, a 26-year-old woman whose body was found Dec. 28 on a sidewalk. Authorities said they believe Hankins served as a lookout and a getaway driver for the other three as they robbed people in Evansville and Indianapolis in December. Authorities said they believe Jordan, Hankins and others were involved in a robbery and shooting at an Evansville house on Dec. 26. One person was killed and another was injured, police said. Auhtorities said they believe Hankins was killed to keep her from talking to investigators about the crime spree. - (-88-) - (Black-on-White) - (crime) |
Sports: Judge To Decide On Guilty Plea In BYU Rape Case A judge will decide this week on whether or not a former Brigham Young University football player can withdraw his guilty plea in alleged rape case. Twenty-year-old Karland Bennett was initially one of four players charged with aggravated sexual assault after a 17-year-old girl accused them of raping her in August 2004. Last summer, Bennett agreed to plead guilty to lesser charges of dealing in harmful material to a minor and obstructing justice in exchange for testifying against two of his teammates. Bennett's attorney, Greg Skordas, says prosecutors also promised Bennett if he testified, his sentence would be no harsher than theirs. - (more sports) |
Rape, Robbery Suspect Tyrone Bonded Out Of Fla. Jail On Drug Charges Cincinnati - The prime suspect in a violent attack on a county worker has a history with police. Tyrone "Yogi" Franklin, 23, is accused of forcing a woman back into her car downtown Monday morning, making her withdraw cash from an ATM, and then raping her in an abandoned shed. But his criminal record started about three summers ago, when he was involved in a fatal police chase. Just about five weeks ago, Franklin was in a Florida jail under a fake name on crack charges. Sarasota police confirmed that they used a Taser gun on him during a foot pursuit, and claim they found him in possession of 41 crack rocks. After bonding out, he drove to Cincinnati, where he's suspected in Monday' rape, robbery and carjacking. - (crime) |
DNA brings break in University of Florida co-ed rape case For eight years, police have had no leads and no suspects in the 1997 rape of a University of Florida student. But that all changed two weeks ago after a positive DNA match led investigators to one man: Leo Price Jr. Police arrested the 52-year-old Gainesville man on charges of sexual battery, attempted murder and armed burglary in connection to the Nov. 20, 1997 incident in which a 19-year-old UF student was raped in her apartment. The rapist entered an unlocked door at the victim's apartment at 7:30 a.m. while she was asleep, Nixon said. Armed with a knife, the rapist tried to smother the victim with her pillow and he then raped her. - (crime) |
