• 2 Chinese students shot dead in Canada
  The Chinese Embassy in Canada confirmed to China Daily yesterday that the two students, both male, were shot at Fullhouse Karaoke Tea Caf in the city's Chinatown area at about 2:45am.  Local newspapers said one man died instantly after being shot in the head, while the other who was shot about 10 times succumbed to injuries in hospital. Embassy figures show that there are about 50,000 Chinese students in Canada, including more than 2,000 in the capital. An urgent notice was issued by the embassy to warn Chinese citizens to be vigilant when they travel or live in Canada. - (Canada)

• Failed London Bombers' Trial Set for '06
  LONDON -- A judge Thursday set a September 2006 trial date for five men accused of plotting to murder passengers on London's transit system in a series of attempted bomb attacks. The defendants are Muktar Said Ibrahim, 27; Ramzi Mohamed, 23; Yassin Omar, 24; Hussein Osman, 27, and Asiedu, 32.

  MECCA, Saudi Arabia -- Iran's hard-liner president, who has called for Israel's destruction, said Thursday that the Jewish state should be moved to Europe if the West wants to make up for the Holocaust.   NEW YORK -- The head of a group that helps distribute Holocaust reparations said thousands of Austrian Jewish victims of the Nazis may receive some money within weeks after a judge  dismissed litigation blocking the payouts. Gideon Taylor, executive vice president of the Jewish Claims Conference, said initial payouts for up to 19,000 victims or their heirs could begin early next year.

  NEW YORK -- A former police officer with mental problems linked to the World Trade Center disaster was sentenced to prison Wednesday after declaring he had been trying to kill only himself when he placed a bomb in a Times Square subway station. Joseph Rodriguez, who had pleaded guilty Oct. 24 to reckless endangerment, was given one to three years in prison.

  "The man sitting next to me got on the floor," said passenger Olga Echeverria, of Guatemala. "I threw myself on the floor to pray for God's mercy on us." Alpizar got up from his seat and ran toward the plane's door, with his wife yelling in Spanish. "Officers told him to stop and he said no," the teen said. "He was running like a crazy man." The Alpizars had been married for about two decades and met when Anne was an exchange student in Costa Rica, family members said. Rigoberto became a naturalized U.S. citizen.
