But his defense attorney said al-Masri wouldn't receive a fair hearing if he was sent to the United States and expressed fears that some American evidence against him may have been obtained from tortured witnesses. |

Statements, Alleged Belmont Shore Rapist LONG BEACH The so- called Belmont Shore rapist planned his attacks shrewdly, preyed on vulnerable women and often spoke politely and pleasantly despite the horror he was inflicting on his victims, according to denoscriptions by several women who testified. The unusual portrait emerged during the rape trial of Mark Wayne Rathbun, 34, who is charged with sexually assaulting 14 women in and around Long Beach. DNA evidence has allegedly linked all of the attacks. Rathbun has pleaded not guilty to the crimes. Among the victims who testified were an 82-year-old cancer survivor with a colostomy bag, a 45-year-old woman who had been chaste before she was raped, and a 65-year-old Huntington Beach resident who said she was raped at least four times within a 30-minute span. - (forum) |

Reach Verdict In Murdered Sisters Trial HOUSTON -- A man was found guilty of murdering three young sisters in their home because he was angry his 16-year-old girlfriend broke up with him. Anthony Quinn Francois got into an argument with his ex-girlfriend, Shemika Patterson, 16, and then opened fire in the family's home. Patterson's sisters -- Nikesha Patterson, 15; Ashley Patterson, 11; and Britanny Patterson, 10 -- were all shot to death. Shemika Patterson, 16, and her mother, Sheila Patterson, 34, were shot in their heads and backs, and survived. - (The Bobster) |

City Councilman Arrested On Homo Sex-Abuse Charges CORNELIUS, Ore. -- A former Cornelius city councilman is accused of sexually abusing a 17-year-old boy. Detectives say 40-year-old Scott Lyle Rice abused the teen while working as a counselor at the "Straight Ahead Shelter". Psychiatric Exams Sought in Detroit Case DETROIT -- A lawyer for a man accused of killing two police officers told a judge Wednesday he will have an independent psychiatric evaluation done on his client after a state expert found him competent to stand trial. Eric Marshall, 23, was charged with murder during an arraignment hearing for the deaths of officers Jennifer Fettig, 26, and Matthew Bowens, 21. Suspect in South Carolina Officer's Death Captured in Florida COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A man wanted in the shooting death of an off-duty Orangeburg police officer was captured in central Florida. Mikal Deen Mahdi, 21, of Virginia, was spotted by police in the truck he stole from Orangeburg Public Safety Department Capt. Former teacher "Rashawn" gets nine years for sex with 15-year-old girl A former substitute teacher was sentenced to nine years in prison for sexual assault on a minor. A jury convicted Rashawn L. Smith, who taught at Dunnellon High School, of sexual battery on a child by a person with custodial authority. The victim was 15 at the time of the assault. Now the victim testified that she and Smith were alone in the boys' locker room at the school's gym when Smith sexually assaulted her with his fingers. |

down Pervert Pleads Not Guilty In Rape Of 5-Month-Old Boy CLEVELAND -- A man accused if raping a 5-month-old baby boy pleaded not guilty Tuesday. Benjamin Hardley, 50, is charged with one count of rape. Cleveland police say a woman left her son with Hardley at a Central Avenue home Saturday, and when she returned he was sexually assaulting the infant. Hardley was arrested two years ago on kidnapping, attempting rape and gross sexual imposition charges, involving a 7-year-old boy. The case was recently dismissed. - (Border Ruffian) |

Charged With Killing Dad Caught In Central Florida Fla. -- A 14-year-old girl on the run after being charged with murdering her father has been arrested in Florida, authorities said. Kayla Marie LaSala had been under house arrest at an uncle's house and fled on July 3 after removing an electronic monitoring device from her ankle and gluing it to a cat. A tip came in to detectives on Tuesday that she was in an Orlando, Fla., suburb with a 25-year-old man. Kayla LaSala apparently met Troy Gilmore in a chatroom on the Internet three months ago. She's been staying with him since July 6. Gilmore is charged with abduction and sexual battery. He told police he had sex with LaSala, but said he didn't know she was only 14. - (Tyrone N. Butts) |

Former Nebraska running back Thunder Collins was arrested for burglary and assault Former Nebraska running back Thunder Collins has been arrested in Lancaster County on two warrants stemming from incidents in 2003. Collins, 24, was charged last year with burglary and assault over allegations that he broke into the Corvallis, Ore., apartment of Oregon State cornerback Jamaal Jackson and Collins' former girlfriend Shannon Howell.
