Ex-inmate sought in slaying of woman After the man who knifed Merline Port-Louis got out of jail recently, Nassau police gave her a panic button to press in case he came again. At 2:39 Saturday morning, she pressed the button. At 2:44, police found Port-Louis dying on the asphalt in front of her Brook Street home in New Cassel. She'd been shot several times with a handgun. Police are seeking Marlon Fann, 34, Fann was convicted of felony assault for attacking Port-Louis in a West Hempstead parking lot three years ago, police said. He got out of jail in April. Port-Louis got the panic button earlier this month. |

A Newport News man convicted of killing a motel clerk who offered him a ride last year was sentenced to 58 years in prison William Ola Henderson was convicted on March 3 of first degree murder, carjacking and two firearms charges related to the May 6, 2004 death of John Michael Register. Register, 21, was working as a motel clerk in Fredericksburg when Henderson asked him for a ride to a bus stop, according to court testimony. While they were in the car, Henderson asked Register to drive him to Newport News because he had marijuana on him and didn't want to take it on the bus. Register refused, and at some point Henderson shot Register in the back of his ear and put his body in the trunk of the car. - (crime) - (black on white) |

Mandela son-in-law seeking to resolve rape charge in Connecticut The son-in-law of former South African president Nelson Mandela, who left Connecticut 12-years ago while facing rape charges, is trying to resolve that case, his attorney said Friday. Isaac Amuah, a former professor at Manchester Community Technical College, was accused of sexually assaulting a 34-year-old student from his algebra class inside Amuah's Manchester apartment. Amuah was charged with first-degree sexual assault and unlawful restraint. He was given permission to travel to South Africa for the holidays in 1993 and never returned. - (crime) - (Africa) |
Traffic light shooting victim asks: Why? Alexander Demitras planned to wrap up last weekend by going out for a bite to eat with his girlfriend. Instead he ended it in a hospital with five bullet wounds, a metal rod in his shattered arm and a few less organs than he started with. On Sunday night, Demitras, 19, was shot in his car outside the Liberty Tunnels in an attack his parents said was utterly unprovoked. A denoscription of the shooter's vehicle, a maroon Ford Taurus, was broadcast over the police radio. Officers spotted the car, tailed it and arrested Damon Woodson in front of a Downtown restaurant. Police: Woman Kept Dead Man In Closet To Collect Checks A Gary woman was arrested Tuesday after police found her disabled cousin dead in his home. Darcel Pettus faces three felony neglect charges, Chicago television station NBC5 reported. Police said Pettus took over the care of Victor Thomas, 42, after her mother's recent death 18 months ago. |

African American Death Row Inmate Kenneth Williams Admits Murder Role Kenneth Williams will be charged with murder in the death of 36-year-old Jerrell Jenkins, police said Wednesday. In 1998, Williams was convicted of kidnapping and killing a college cheerleader. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. |
Oregon: Graduating senior dies after attack by black man University of Oregon student Phillip Gillins died from injuries suffered in an attack that happened a day before he was to take part in commencement ceremonies. Gillins, 22, died the next day from a brain injury suffered when three men confronted him in an alley about a block from a campus-area bar he had just left. One of the men punched Gillins in the face. He fell to the ground and hit his head on concrete, never regaining consciousness. The assailants fled when Gillins failed to wake. Police are looking for his attackers. The man who threw the fatal punch was described as a black man in his early 20s with a slight build and a shaved head. Alleged Rapist Found Sleeping In Woman's Bed Ohio -- Police said alleged rapist Robert Hammond, 22, was found sleeping in a woman's bed Saturday morning. "Robert broke into the residence, concealed his face, raped her and told her he'd kill her if she told police or did not comply," said Delaware police. The woman was able to escape the apartment and stop a motorist, who helped her contact police. Police said they believe Hammond may have attacked other women. - (Gman) |
Sex Trial for Choir Director The sexual abuse trial of a former choir director for a North Philadelphia church is set to begin today. Otis Joseph was a part-time choir director at the Bright Hope Baptist Church in North Philadelphia. Investigators say Joseph Molested 6 girls, some as young as 7 years old. Bisexual Pedophile Sex Suspect's Switcheroo A man will go to trial in a series of alleged attacks on 10 children after being allowed to withdraw guilty and no-contest pleas, a judge ruled. Lamar Zamichieli had pleaded guilty in July to sexually assaulting five girls and no contest to molesting five boys in 2003. Caught in the act: Cops: Woman flees rapist – then ID’s him from predator posting A Dorchester woman who was allegedly kidnapped and raped by a registered sexual predator staggered naked and bleeding into a police station yesterday after leaping from her attacker's car and racing several blocks for help, cops said. As police called for an ambulance, the woman spotted a board festooned with mugshots of Level 3 sex offenders and began to scream, pointing at a picture of Raymond V. Diamond, 43, who has been arrested for rape seven times and convicted of three sexual attacks. ``That's him!'' the woman, who is in her 30s, hollered through hysterical tears around 6:40 a.m., pounding her fists on the glass case holding the felons' pictures. ``That's the guy who raped me!'' Westley Devon Harris was depicted by prosecutors Monday as a sociopathic killer who gunned down six members of his 16-year-old girlfriend's family at their south Alabama farm when they tried to run him off. But the defense said Janice Ball the girlfriend, who claimed she had been sexually abused by her father and a brother, had a motive to want them dead and didn't act like a terrified victim when she hid out with Harris after the killings. Suspect Arrested In Killing Of Mother In Park CINCINNATI -- Police said they have arrested a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of a young mother last weekend, News 5's Emily Longnecker reported. Jason Baker, 27, was taken into custody late Tuesday afternoon. He was wanted in connection with the shooting of 23-year-old Renee Hill, who was killed while sitting at a picnic table in Findlay Park in Over-the-Rhine Saturday. Witnesses said Hill, 23, was visiting with family before she went to church when she was shot in the head by a stray bullet. Police said Hill died instantly. - (White Boy) |
Police announce suspect in Bonistall murder The Newark Police Department announced early Monday afternoon that, with unspecified physical evidence in hand, they have charged James Edward Cooke Jr., 34, of the unit block of Lincoln Drive in Newark, with the murder of 20-year-old University of Delaware student Lindsey Marie Bonistall. The body of the sophomore English major from White Plains, N.Y., was discovered in her Towne Court apartment early Sunday, May 1, after an arson fire. Samara drowned her 6-year-old daughter in a bathtub then went to a hardware store, bought an ax and chopped off the girl's head On June 7, Samara Spann's father called the sheriff's office to say he had heard rumors that she had killed the girl. Three days later, a Sacramento County sheriff's detective arrested her on an unrelated accusation of slapping a different child. While in custody, she confessed to killing Kyeimah, prosecutors said. Woman is charged in fatal hit-run in Mt. Holly Police charged a Burlington City woman yesterday in connection with a hit-and-run accident that killed an elderly pedestrian last week. Mauricia Crump, 26, was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident. The charge is a third-degree felony. Investigators said Crump was driving on Jacksonville Road when her Mazda 626 hit Stephanie Hawkins, 83, of Starling Lane as Hawkins walked along the road.
