Court Grants New Trial for Death Row Inmate The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled that a death row inmate should get a new trial because his original attorney failed to provide an adequate defense. The South Carolina court says that was not the case with Robert Lee Nance's attorney. The court says in some instances the attorney actually bolstered the case against his own client. Nance was convicted in the 1992 slaying of 73-year-old Violet Fraley of Florence. Her husband was seriously injured in the attack. A jury also convicted Nance of rape, attempted murder, burglary and armed robbery. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (TNB) |

"Offing Adolf" - by Séan Carroll In his masterful 2004 German film Downfall (Der Untergang) writer Bernd Eichinger has Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels tell Brigadeführer Mohnke: "I repeat, Mohnke, I feel no sympathy (for German civilians being slaughtered in the defense of Berlin). German people chose their fate. That may surprise some people. Don’t fool yourself. We didn’t force the German people. They gave us a mandate and now their little throats are being cut." - (Commentary) |
