Father of suspect in terror plot at loss * Father: Plot Suspect Not in 'Right Mind'
Narseal BatisteNarcisse BatisteBUNKIE, La. (AP) — The father of a man accused in a terrorism plot to blow up Chicago's Sears Tower said Saturday he was at a loss to explain how his son was suspected of leading such a group. "He's not in his right mind, I'll tell you that," Narcisse Batiste, 72, said in an interview at his home here in central Louisiana. His 32-year-old son, Narseal Batiste, and six other men were arrested Thursday in a Miami warehouse. Federal authorities said they had no explosives and lacked adequate funding, with their only link to al-Qaeda being an FBI informant fronting as a member of the terrorist group. Their alleged plot to blow up the 110-floor tower in Chicago and government buildings around Miami was labeled "more aspirational than operational" by FBI officials. Narseal Batiste was accused of being the group's ringleader, telling the informant that he and his soldiers wanted to attend al-Qaeda training and planned a "full ground war" against the United States to "kill all the devils we can," according to an indictment. - (Newsroom) - (crime)

Three Florida Prison Guards Held in Sex-for-Booze Scandal * Mugshots of three arrested guards released
Alfred Barnes Alan MooreLavon SpenceTALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Three prison guards indicted in a sex-for-contraband scandal that led to a deadly gunfight between another guard and federal agents were ordered held without bail, while two others were released until an August trial. The five pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and appeared in court for bail hearings Thursday. A sixth guard charged in the scandal, 43-year-old Ralph Hill, died in the shootout Wednesday as federal agents arrived at the prison to arrest him. U.S. Magistrate Judge William Sherrill said he decided to keep Alfred Barnes, Gregory Dixon and Alan Moore in custody because they could be flight risks, but he said the men, all military veterans who have been corrections officers for years, wouldn't be mixed in with the regular inmate population for their own protection. - (crime)

Texas Executes Man for 1999 Triple Slaying
Lamont Reese"My name is Lamont Reese, but you can just call me "Mont."  I'm 28 years old.  I enjoy reading books and magazines.  It's very lonely here without any family or friends to help me get through all this madness.  I've only been here a short time, but in that time it's been very lonesome.  So a few words from anyone who really cares would be welcomed.  I like to try and write poems.  Not very good yet, but I'm working on it.  Well I hope to hear from someone soon."

Lawyer: Murder Case Jurors Too Young * Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned
Attorney Says 79-Year-Old Woman Is Too Old To Be Tried By Jury Of Her Peers
Lena Sims Driskell A 79-year-old woman accused of fatally shooting her 85-year-old ex-beau is being deprived of her constitutional right to a fair trial, her attorney said, because the potential jurors are not old enough for her to be judged by a jury of her peers. As Lena Sims Driskell peered over her gold-rimmed glasses at potential jurors in her murder trial, some of the 58 candidates were young enough to be her great-grandchildren. Only five seemed close to 70, the legal age for exemption as a juror in the state of Georgia. Driskell is accused of fatally shooting Herman Winslow on June 10, 2005, as he read the newspaper at the senior citizens home where the two lived. After dating for a year, police said Driskell became angry when Winslow broke off their relationship and started seeing another woman.- (crime)

Alofa Time charged with 1st degree murder and two counts of 2nd degree murder - a severed female head lying on Franklin Road."
Alofa TimeSamantha MurphyA twisted and gruesome story of murder unfolded Thursday in the Treasure Valley, resulting in the deaths of an innocent mother and her little girl, and the decapitation of the suspect's ex-wife in her Nampa home. Police say the story began Wednesday night, where a man brutally killed his ex-wife, cutting off her head, according to officers.

Thursday, the story ended with two more victims, an innocent mother and child traveling on Franklin Road near Cloverdale. "At about 6:30 we had a Boise police officer who was eastbound on Franklin Road saw a truck in front of him swerve into a car in the oncoming lane and crash into a passenger car."  Inside the car were a mother and her two young daughters.  36-year-old Samantha Murphy and 4-year-old Jae Lynn were killed instantly, leaving eight-year-old Sydney as the lone survivor.
Police say the driver of the pickup, 50-year-old Alofa Time purposely drove his truck into Murphy's car.  But the story doesn't end there. Deputy Chief Webb goes on to say that “As other officers arrived on the scene they found a horrific piece of evidence, a severed female head lying on Franklin Road." Officers found the decapitated body of his ex-wife, 47-year old Theresa Time in the garage. "The female was sitting in the driver's compartment of the vehicle,” says Canyon County Coroner Vicki Degeus-Morris.  “Obviously, she had been decapitated." Time had a history of violence.  According to court papers, just this Spring, Alofa was charged with domestic battery against Theresa. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (reader link)

Skull Found in creek ID'd as 5-year-old White girl Emily Rimel - kidnaped, raped and murdered by black
A skull found in a creek earlier this week has been identified as that of a five-year-old columbus-area girl who disappeared a year and a-half ago. Investigators have identified the remains of
Emily Rimel through DNA. Emily was last seen at her home early in the morning on December 7th, 2004. Two people fishing found the skull on Tuesday. The Coroner ays there was trauma to the skull. With confirmation that the remains are those of Emily Rimel, the  prosecutor's office can move ahead with plans to seek murder charges against the main suspect.
Lindsay Bruce
, is serving a 10-year sentence after he was convicted of kidnapping Rimel in December 2004. At the time, Bruce was not charged with murder. While Ohio law does not require the presence of a corpse to charge someone in a homicide, doing so without a body does raise the chances that a jury could acquit. O'Brien says this could easily become a death penalty case based on several factors, including Rimel's age. Over the next few weeks, reports will be written state crime lab investigators and the county coroner's office. Those reports, says O'Brien, will be added to the information already at hand and submitted to the Franklin County grand jury with the goal of charging Bruce with one count of murder. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-White)

Black Sex Offender Charged With Kidnap-Rape-Kill of White 11-year-old Jacksonville Girl In 1996
Robert Shelton Mitchell Fla. -- A Connecticut sex offender will be returned to Florida to face a murder charge after being linked to the decade-old rape and drowning of an 11-year-old girl through a database of DNA from convicted sex offenders. Robert Shelton Mitchell, 43, was being held on a $5 million bond after being arraigned as a fugitive. He will face first-degree murder and capital sexual battery charges in the death of Cherie Morrisette of Jacksonville. The Mandarin Middle School student body was found on Dec. 8, 1996, floating in the St. John's River about 10 miles south of the  apartment she shared with her mother and sister.   An autopsy determined that Cherie drowned shortly after her disappearance on Dec. 2, 1996, and was alive when she either fell into the river or was thrown in. Police labeled the death suspicious, and authorities found a small DNA sample on her underwear and body. Mitchell lived in nearby Middleburg at the time of the girl's death, police said Thursday. Mitchell later moved to Connecticut and was convicted in January 2003 of illegal sexual contact with another child. - (Black-on-White)
