Connerly heads up something called the American Civil
Rights Institute and he's been in the press of late because his so called Racial
Privacy Initiative (officially, Classification by Race, Ethnicity, Color or National
Origin Act) has qualified to be on the California primary ballot in March of 2004.
What the act will do, if passed, is keep California's state government from collecting
race data on students or state employees. |
Reinforcing the view that the RPI is good, at least
in the minds of aracial white conservatives, is the fact that many liberals, and
large black organizations such as the NAACP, have lined up against the bill. If
they're against it, it must be good, figure the aracial white conservatives. |
Before going on, we need to remember, as pointed out
briefly above, that in the U.S., today, "Latino" or "Hispanic"
mostly means mestizo or brown people. Technically, the term Latino also encompasses
Spaniards and other whites. But, Spaniards aren't the majority of Latinos in America.
This is important to understand, because it is by using the term Latino (or Hispanic)
as a substitute for "brown people," that government funded racial/ethnic
discrimination against whites is often being allowed to secretly creep into our
society. |
In one California city that I've studied, a group
recently advertised for "Latinas" for an after school program. A white
citizen called the number listed and was told that it was a program that offered
homework help and some other things for girls from the ages of 9-15--- but, only
IF they were Latinas. Apparently, you could be of any race, so long as you were
Latina (wink, wink). The citizen did some research and discovered that the program
was funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services with our tax money.
He then filed a complaint of racial discrimination against whites. |
Some apologists for the Latinas Wanted program tried to maintain
that the reason it is for Latinas only, is because the neighborhood where the
program is located is heavily Latino. The citizen who complained did some more
research and discovered that the city, which is relatively small geographically,
is approximately 31.8% Latino, and that it really doesn't have any natural barriers
between neighborhoods such as rivers, mountains, or even freeways. One neighborhood
blends into another. With this in mind, it seemed to the citizen that the claim
that a program, funded with tax money, is only for Latinas because that's who
lives near the program location, was hollow. In fact, it appears, to some observers,
that this and other Latino only programs are being purposely located in a small
geographic area, in what may be an attempt to keep non-Latinos out of the programs.
Another program in the same city, also funded with our tax money, is supposed
to serve "youths." Statistics from the program show that 99.67% of the
youths in the program are Latino. There were no blacks, and no Asians and only
one who claimed to be white, but who may actually have been Latino. This program
is also now under investigation by the feds. |

Because his own genes are all mixed up, Ward Connerly appears to be something of a pitch man for the Tan Everyman. Connerly may not know which box to select when he's asked his race, but other Americans do know which box to check, and many want to keep it that way. Many Americans also don't want to see their tax money go to support discrimination against any distinct racial group, and they know they need these statistics to keep that from happening. |
