BRYAN — A Central Texas jury on Wednesday ordered McDonald’s to pay $27 million in actual damages to the families of two teenagers killed in a car accident while en route to a hospital after a fight outside the fast-food restaurant. In a statement, McDonald’s said it will appeal the verdict. A release from the attorney representing the families of 18-year-old Denton James Ward of Flower Mound and 19-year-old Lauren Bailey Crisp of Dripping Springs said McDonald’s lax security led to their deaths in 2012 in College Station. The two were with another couple when they stopped at the restaurant. The young men were beaten by a mob in the parking lot. Their girlfriends tried to get them to a hospital but the driver ran a red light and was hit by a pickup, killing Crisp. The release says evidence at the trial showed police were called more than 20 times to break up fights at the restaurant in the year leading up to the incident. The families believed McDonald’s should have provided better security at the restaurant. Witnesses testified that Ward died in the parking lot after being kicked and stomped on by as many as 20 attackers, according to the release. McDonald’s maintained that Ward died in the car wreck that followed, and that the company wasn’t responsible for the teens’ safety. One of the attackers was sentenced to 90 days in jail for assaulting Ward’s male friend. No other arrests were made. - (Black-on-white)

He is tiny, but he wore shackles on his hands and feet, as his mom put her hand on his shoulder. On Tuesday, Lawhorn became the youngest person ever charged with murder in Kent County history, and among the youngest ever in Michigan. He’s charged with open murder for the death of 9-year-old Michael “Conner” Verkerke. It was just Monday at the Pinebrook Village Mobile Home Park that Lawhorn asked three boys he didn’t know — including Conner — if they wanted to go play with him at the playground, the mother of one of those boys said. “There were three boys at that park, he picked a random one,” said Tiffany Armijo, whose 9-year-old son witnessed the stabbing of his best friend. Lawhorn pulled a knife out of the sand and started stabbing Conner in the back. Police said it was a kitchen knife and that Conner was stabbed repeatedly. “It was random, there was no reason, it wasn’t provoked, they weren’t fighting, there was no words exchanged, it was just malicious,” Armijo said. Conner reached his home and collapsed. Lawhorn ran to a nearby house and called 911 himself, said he had taken pills, had stabbed somebody and wanted to die. - (Black-on-white)

At 12:05 p.m., Globe went to the Shell Gas Station on 1631 Elm Hill Pike where he reportedly carjacked Dennis Garlangerat. I gotta gun,' and I looked at him and he said, 'Otherwise, I'm going to kill the blank kids.' So, I gave him the keys to my car." Globe drove the stolen Ford Windstar van to Two Rivers Parkway where he pulled over and approached Sharon Begley and her friend as they were getting out of their vehicle to look at a house. They got into their car and followed him to Two Rivers Park where they blocked the entrance and called 911. Shortly after, he abandoned the stolen van and was picked up by a woman driving a silver Toyota Corolla. The van was still rolling and was headed in the direction of children playing in the park.     White man wrongly imprisoned for rape-murder of White woman by black - seeks millions from state
Kenneth IrelandKevin Benefield HARTFORD, Conn. — A man cleared of murder and rape charges after being locked up for two decades made an emotional appeal for millions of dollars in compensation on Tuesday, telling the state claims commissioner about the fear he endured in prison. Kenneth Ireland was imprisoned at the age of 18 and released in 2009 at age 39 after DNA tests proved that another man fatally beat a mother of four in 1986. He's seeking $5.4 million to $8 million under Connecticut's wrongful incarceration law. "You never think this is going to happen to you, especially in America," Ireland said during his nearly two-hour appearance. "I figured there was an error being made and that they'd figure this out and it would go away." He described the terror he felt as a 20-year-old man heading to a maximum security prison notorious for gang violence. "I was in absolute turmoil. I was telling anybody who would listen there's been a mistake made, I didn't do this. I'm innocent," he said. "I couldn't get anyone to listen to me." Ireland said his ordeal began when he was 17 and was called to the Wallingford police station to answer questions about the drowning death of a friend a year earlier. Police soon began questioning Ireland about the beating death of 30-year-old Barbara Pelkey.

  • U.S. District Judge Freda Wolfson Rules Santeria is Recognized Religion
Freda WolfsonNJ Law Journal--A priest of Santeria—an Afro-Caribbean religion that requires animal sacrifice—can claim his arrest on animal cruelty charges violates the federal constitution, federal judge has ruled in a case of first impression in the Third Circuit. Ruling on a motion to dismiss a civil rights suit, U.S. District Judge Freda Wolfson in Trenton upheld claims of violation of free exercise of religion, as well as of illegal search and seizure, and found that an animal-protection officer who investigated the sacrifices is not entitled to immunity. U.S. Supreme Court precedent "not only establishes the legitimacy of the Santeria faith, but also its unique practice relating to the ritualistic sacrifice of certain animals," Wolfson said Tuesday in Badillo v. Amato.
