Police: Maggie Daniels died by strangulation
Sharman OdomMaggie DanielsNEWTON Maggie Daniels, a Newton high school counselor, died by strangulation after a struggle inside her apartment, Newton Police Chief Donald Brown II said during a news conference Monday. And public records indicate the man accused of killing her had an extensive arrest record, including two dismissed cases of choking other women. We have several solid theories that I cannot speak of at this time.” Brown said autopsy results show that she was strangled. Brown said Sunday that Daniels probably did not know Odom, even though they lived only 100 yards from each other in the same apartment complex.

Kansas County Braces For Cost Of (Interracial black-on-white) Capital Murder Trial

Kenneth IrelandKevin Benefield HARTFORD, Conn. — A man cleared of murder and rape charges after being locked up for two decades made an emotional appeal for millions of dollars in compensation on Tuesday, telling the state claims commissioner about the fear he endured in prison. Kenneth Ireland was imprisoned at the age of 18 and released in 2009 at age 39 after DNA tests proved that another man fatally beat a mother of four in 1986. He's seeking $5.4 million to $8 million under Connecticut's wrongful incarceration law. "You never think this is going to happen to you, especially in America," Ireland said during his nearly two-hour appearance. "I figured there was an error being made and that they'd figure this out and it would go away." He described the terror he felt as a 20-year-old man heading to a maximum security prison notorious for gang violence. "I was in absolute turmoil. I was telling anybody who would listen there's been a mistake made, I didn't do this. I'm innocent," he said. "I couldn't get anyone to listen to me." Ireland said his ordeal began when he was 17 and was called to the Wallingford police station to answer questions about the drowning death of a friend a year earlier. Police soon began questioning Ireland about the beating death of 30-year-old Barbara Pelkey.

The roughly three-block walk is one the 54-year-old home renovator said he's made countless times since moving to the neighborhood in 2006. But what should have been a routine errand quickly turned into a harrowing encounter with a group of teenagers who left him bloody and battered. He remembers only flashes, he said, including the teens taking his laptop from his backpack but never attempting -- despite ample opportunity -- to take the $90 he had in his wallet. "This was a planned assault," Murphy said when reached by phone Tuesday (July 29), two days after the attack. "It was not a robbery attempt. They just wanted to stomp somebody." Murphy, who serves as vice president of the Faubourg St. Roch Improvement Association, became the second victim of weekend attacks in St. Roch. New Orleans police believe both were carried out by some of the same juveniles. Around 9:30 p.m., Murphy said he was walking in the 1300 block of Music Street when his assailants "blindsided" him from around the street corner. He doesn't know how long the beating lasted, only that maybe seven or eight individuals punched and kicked him multiple times in the face and body. One blow left a clear shoe imprint on his forehead. - (Black-on-white)
