Mother of slain Cape Coral woman sues over wrongful death
Connell CarrollDanielle BlackburnNicole SmithThe 2011 killing of 22-year-old Nicole Smith could have been prevented, a lawsuit filed Tuesday alleges, if Lee County probation officers and sheriff’s deputies fulfilled their legal duties. Smith, of Cape Coral, was shot to death two years ago Wednesday by ex-boyfriend Connell Carroll, who was charged with second-degree murder. In a wrongful death lawsuit filed in Lee County circuit court, Smith’s mother, Ann Seaburg, accuses the sheriff’s office, probation department, Lee County Board of County Commissioners and two probation employees of negligence that contributed to Smith’s death. “She thought that the police were going to protect her,” Seaburg said. “And that didn’t happen.” Carroll had a prior history of domestic violence and had abused another girlfriend, Danielle Blackburn, who got a restraining order against him in 2006. He violated the order twice over a three-year period, according to Seaburg’s lawsuit. Blackburn was murdered in 2009. Carroll was the lead suspect but was never charged. - (Black-on-white)

Black boyfriend charged in torture death of White three-year-old appears in court
Marcus JohnsonMarcus JohnsonHunter WiseThe man police arrested for his alleged involvement in the death of a three-year-old boy made his initial appearance in court. Marcus Johnson is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of three-year-old Hunter Wise. The prosecutor said every homicide is tragic, but he can barely think of anything more heinous than what occurred in this case. The prosecutor indicated Johnson tortured the three-year-old. The boy had an eye injury, burns on his buttocks and ankle, he may have been dipped in scalding water and may have died due to shock and trauma. “The injuries were severe. There wasn’t just one injury. There were many injuries. This child obviously suffered,” the prosecutor said. On May 10th, the Mount Pleasant Police Department and South Shore Fire Department were called to a home for a report of an unresponsive three-year-old male. The child, later identified as Wise, was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Johnson is the boyfriend of the child’s mother, Samantha Rush. Wise’s father, Joseph M. Wise said “My son was everything to me. I would have done everything for him. I’m going to be honest. I hope (Johnson) never sees daylight again. For a man to do something like that to an infant is just wrong in so many ways. I just can’t even believe a person would do something of this nature,” the boy’s father said.
In 2008, Johnson was charged with battery and disorderly conduct, and accused of domestic abuse. - (Black-on-white)

Police: White family attacked by blacks for being in "wrong neighborhood"
Donald DickersonBATON ROUGE, LA - He was in the "wrong neighborhood" is just one reason a man gave as to why he was punched in the face. His wife and daughter were also hit. Police arrested one man and ticketed two others. They are all accused of punching the family. A family stopped to get gas Sunday around 10 p.m. "Upon our arrival, we located three victims who were attacked in the parking lot," said Cpl. Tommy Stubbs, spokesperson for the Baton Rouge Police Department. Stubbs said a man wearing a pink shirt was in line trying to pay for gas when Donald Dickerson, 41, started making fun of him, leading to an argument. "The defendant (Dickerson) approached the white male victim," the police report stated. It went on to read, "the defendant told him he was in the wrong neighborhood and he was not going to make it out." The victim said that's when he "was punched and knocked to the ground." At this time, his wife got out of the car and ran to help her husband. The victim said, "he continued to struggle with the defendant and was eventually knocked unconscious, which later he awoke in the hospital." His wife told police, "after running to help her husband, she remembers falling to the ground and (being) knocked unconscious." According to a close family friend, that's when the couple's teenage daughter got out of the car to check on her parents and, "observed a female punch her mother in the face, when her mother then fell to the concrete, hitting her head on the surface." The daughter was also punched in the face. Dickerson was arrested and charged with second-degree battery. The other two suspects, Devin Bessye, 24, and Ashley Simmons, 22, were released on site after police wrote them each a summons for simple battery. The victim suffered "a broken eye socket, broken nose, and several lacerations to the face," and his wife was knocked unconscious. "I feel that's racist," said Henderson. - (Black-on-white)

John WillisGa. — Police say an attack that left three men battered was racially motivated. John Willis appears before a judge to face charges of aggravated assault and armed robbery, but detectives said the reason for the attack was not the money in the victims’ wallets. The men were walking last month when they were attacked. “I think they were very lucky that one or more of them did not end up getting killed,” Sgt. John Sweat of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said. “They instantly saw three white guys and started yelling,” the victim said. He said he and two friends had just cut through a woodline and were walking when they heard insults from a nearby duplex. “They were yelling that this was their street, ‘This is our street, crackers. What do you have in your pockets, crackers? This is our street,’” the victim said. The victim said the group just kept on walking until they got to the end of the street and they were attacked. A fugitive taskforce arrested Willis, 32, at the duplex. Investigators said they found a shotgun and evidence linking Willis to the crime when they arrested him. Deputies said at least one more arrest is expected. - (Black-on-white)
