Final (black) defendant in Gregory Gross beating death gets 30-year minimum sentence SAGINAW, MI — A 21-year-old man on Monday, April 7, became the second of four defendants to receive a 30-year minimum sentence for the February 2012 beating death of Gregory Gross. With Monday's sentencing of Elmer T. Curry III, Saginaw County Circuit Judge Robert L. Kaczmarek now has sentenced all four men charged in Gross' death. Kaczmarek sentenced Curry to 30 to 50 years in prison for second-degree murder, a charge to which Curry pleaded in July for his role in the Feb. 26 death of the 52-year-old Gross on Roberts near Ray on Saginaw's southeast side. Curry's plea agreement called for him to testify against his co-defendants, but he reneged on that in October during Daquavis D. Martin's trial. Curry's sentence is the same one that William T. White, 21, received in March. White, also known as “Moo Moo,” also pleaded to second-degree murder but did not agree to testify against his co-defendants. DeMarkus R. Bowes, 19, did testify against Martin and was sentenced to 18 years and nine months to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder. - (Black-on-white) |

A police officer was murdered and the Democrat mayor 'Outlaw' attends the funeral of the criminal instead of the officer. This story is so "out there" we first assumed it was bogus. But as we checked into it we learned that it may not be. Susy Raybon posted the following on the Miltary Examiner (link below): One-thousand “brothers in blue” came to pay their respects this afternoon to Officer Alexander Thalmann, 22, killed in the line of duty in New Bern, N.C., last week. Thalmann’s partner, Officer Justin Wester, 23, is recovering from a gunshot wound to his leg from the shootout that left convicted felon, Bryan Stallings, 35, dead. The incident happened March 28, in the housing projects known as Craven Terrace. The town’s grief was made even more painful by the local administration’s handling of events following the young officer’s death. For unknown reasons, newly elected, Mayor Dana Outlaw chose to attend Thursday’s funeral of the careercareer criminal. Adding insult to injury, last night’s planned memorial for local citizens to say “goodbye” to Alexander Thalmann was cancelled by the mayor’s office. |

Jury picked in Darius Johnson murder re-trial Testimony is expected to begin today in the trial of the man accused of killing Robby Ray Kohn after attorneys took two days to pick a jury. This is the second trial for 22-year-old Darius Johnson of Chicago after the first one in January ended in a hung jury. Johnson is charged with first-degree murder, accused of fatally shooting the 41-year-old Kohn on Dec. 6, 2012, in Davenport. Following testimony at Johnson's trial in January, the jury deliberated two days but was unable to reach a verdict. Kohn's body was found in a rural Davenport farm field, 36 hours after police said he was shot in the head. Two others, Barry Hamilton, 21, originally of Chicago, and Jessica Loerzel, 21, of Davenport, have been convicted on lesser charges connected to the case. Hamilton testified at the first trial that he bailed Kohn out of jail two days before the shooting and Kohn owed Hamilton money on the day he was killed. Hamilton insisted he didn't shoot Kohn even though he was the one who drove Kohn, Johnson and Loerzel to the field. He testified that he watched Johnson pull Kohn out of the car and shoot him in the head. - (Black-on-white) |

Police Arrest 3 Teens Following Dangerous "Knockout" Game DAYTON -- Tonight, three Dayton teenagers are in juvenile detention after participating in a violent game of knockout. We first told you about the frightening game last year when videos started popping up online from several states where suspects go up to a complete stranger and sucker punch them, trying to knock them out. Now this game has made it to Dayton. "Oh that's me right there, definitely. He's sneaking up, I didn't even know he was coming. I didn't even see that coming. I was like what the heck," said Ronald Baird while watching the full video of his attack for the first time. "Yeah, I remember this. This part I don't really remember." Three weeks ago a teenager came up to him as he was collecting cans near East Fifth Street and tried twice to knock him out. A second teen was recording the entire thing on a cell phone. When they failed, they ended up robbing him. "I gave them $3 and they took off running," he said. "I wouldn't give them my wallet or my phone, no way." The three teenagers thought their video would give them notoriety but instead it only landed them behind bars. - (Black-on-white) |

Stranger saves woman's life after body consumed by flames - 'She said her boyfriend poured gas on her and set her on fire' Augusta, Ga. -- An Augusta man is dead and a woman is still in the hospital after 70% of her body is consumed by flames. Family members says the stranger who saved, Karla Harter's life, is a hero. A reporter spoke to the victim's daughter who says things would've been worse had it not been for the heroic act of a stranger, she now calls a life saver. "If it had not been for him I would've been left here alone," Britany McGee said as she talked about the man she says saved her mom's life. "God used me to help someone, so I just give God all the glory," said Detrich Cooper. Cooper was visiting family in the neighborhood when he ran to, 46 year old Karla Harter's, burning body. "By the time I got over there her face was burnt-- it was gone. I had to put her hair out and her body was on fire-- I put her body out," he said. "She's got a long way to go, but she's here and that's what matters," McGee said as her eyes filled with tears up. McGee, is Harter's daughter. She says at least 70 percent of her mom's body is burned, but things would've been worse. "She's my life and to have that taken, or almost taken away from you, really opens up your eyes to the fact that it could really happen to you," she said. Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened. They have confirmed that 51 year old, Henry Jefferson III, died and say the call came in as a structure fire. Still no official word on how Jefferson died or what caused Harter to catch on fire, but Cooper says she kept yelling something out. "She said her boyfriend poured gas on her and set her on fire," he said. - (Burned Alive!) |

Two teens arrested in scuffle with teacher at Santa Monica High The cellphone video from inside a classroom at Santa Monica High School went viral late last week. It showed Mark Black, a longtime teacher and wrestling coach, swatting at a student with his arms, grabbing the teenager by the thigh and then crashing into desks and the classroom wall as he tried to execute a takedown. Moments later, Black had the young man pinned to the ground. District Superintendent Sandra Lyon called the incident "utterly alarming" and acted swiftly, placing the teacher on leave pending the outcome of an investigation. In a statement released hours after the fight, she called the teacher's use of physical restraint "unacceptable" and pledged that the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District would offer support to the student's family. But over the weekend, the tide changed. Irate parents flooded Lyon and school board members with letters, castigating the superintendent for pre-judging the popular teacher and fiercely defending Black, 60, for what some saw as an act of bravery. Thousands of people liked a "We Support Coach Black of Samohi" page on Facebook and signed a Change.org petition calling for the coach's reinstatement. So Lyon issued a second statement over the weekend, acknowledging that her remarks about Black had "caused great anger" and apologizing to the community. On Monday, Santa Monica police announced the arrest of an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old in connection with the classroom scuffle and said they would seek battery charges against both students. - (Black-on-white) |

Black Ex-Ficano lieutenant stole from poor to bankroll luxury lifestyle Detroit — Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano's former political lieutenant is a remorseless thief who raided $700,000 from a health-insurance program for the poor and blew the cash on a Louis Vuitton shopping spree, airplane tickets and $10,000 worth of “hair plugs” before his wedding, prosecutors wrote Monday. Michael Grundy should spend up to 17 ½ years in federal prison for heading a public corruption scheme and crippling the county’s ability to provide health care services for poor people, federal prosecutors wrote. “In essence, Grundy stole from the poor to bankroll his luxury lifestyle,” prosecutors Elizabeth Stafford and Gjon Juncaj wrote in a 67-page memo. “He was entrusted with the fiduciary duty of administering a tight budget for the benefit of those vulnerable constituents. Grundy paid no heed to those duties.” Grundy, 42, is the highest-ranking public official caught in an ongoing FBI investigation of Ficano’s administration. He will be sentenced May 8. |

1 arrested, police search for 2 others after day-long crime spree - White female pistol-whipped and robbed March 27, 2014 - ATLANTA — An armed robbery spree that spanned three counties and lasted more than six hours came to an end Wednesday afternoon after police arrested a man considered to be a dangerous gang member. Two other suspects are still on the loose. A (White) mother of two came face to face with Brian Kennedy when he pistol whipped her and robbed. She said she thought he was going to kill her. "'I'm about to die,’ and that's what I thought," the woman said. The woman said she was still shaken up and emotional after being robbed of her purse and struck across the face with the gun. She said she literally looked down the barrel of a gun. "It’s a scary feeling to think that just for $15 you might not see the rest of your family," the woman said. Police think the man who put that fear in her is Kennedy. He was taken into custody by U.S. marshals Thursday. Police said that Kennedy went on a day-long crime spree with two other men, including robbing three people at gunpoint, after stealing a silver BMW from a DeKalb County gas station. U.S. marshals arrested Kennedy, who they say is a dangerous gang member suspected of rape, nearly a dozen carjackings, as many as six armed robberies. - (Black-on-white) |

'Run ... kick ... punch': Little (White) girl thwarts abduction attempt by black man PARKLAND, Wash. - A 6-year-old Parkland girl is safe today because of her smart, quick actions when two men tried to kidnap her in broad daylight in her own neighborhood. The drama unfolded Wednesday as the little girl, Savanna Norman, was walking home after playing and jumping on the trampoline at the home of her friend, 9-year-old Raquelle Pittenger, who lives right across the street. "I looked both ways, and there was no one coming but … then I went halfway across the street, two guys came out of nowhere," Savanna says. And what happened next is every parent's nightmare. "They grabbed me," says Savanna. But Savanna's smart moves made her mom very proud. "Run ... and kick ... and punch," says the little girl. "What's the No. 1 thing you did that got everybody's attention around the whole neighborhood?" asks Savanna's mom, Amy Norman. "I kicked him," says Savanna. "I screamed loud." This 6-year-old knows "stranger danger" well. "'Cause mommy teaches me," she says. Amy saw the attempted kidnapping from her front window, and dashed out the door. "My heart was pounding," she says. Meanwhile, her 9-year-old friend Raquelle watched from steps away. "It made me feel scared and terrible," she says. It was a dangerous situation - derailed by a smart little girl who remembered the right thing to do. "Very proud," says her mom. "What happened ... was very scary for all of us." Now the Normans are considering moving from their neighborhood - or at the very least putting a fence up around their house. The prime suspect, Jakeel Rashon Mason, was arrested and booked into the Pierce County Jail for investigation of unlawful imprisonment. He is being held on $150,000 bail. - (Black-on-white) |

Family speaks about Boyd murder case Although Katharina Lawn likely already knew, her daughters on Friday headed to the cemetery to visit their mother, and tell her that the man who killed her nearly seven years ago was finally convicted. A state Supreme Court jury found Darrell Boyd, 49, guilty in the brutal slaying of Lawn, his former neighbor, inside her apartment on April 20, 2007. Lawn's daughters - Tammy Pierson, April Northern and Holly Stevens, who both live in Texas - said they were "extremely happy" to hear jurors convict Boyd of second-degree murder. "It's been seven years," Northern said. "Unfortunately my mom wasn't (in court) to speak, but everyone was able to speak for her. We're grateful and feel like justice was served." Boyd, she said, won't be on the streets or able to hurt anyone else. Boyd fatally beat and strangled Lawn, 54, inside her apartment and set furniture on fire in an effort to conceal the crime, according to Assistant District Attorney Brian Green. He argued that Boyd was angry at Lawn for calling the police on him two years earlier during a domestic dispute, which resulted in Boyd spending more than a year in prison. - (Black-on-white) |

White Temple Student Assaulted In Broad Daylight Speaks Out PHILADELPHIA — Three Temple University students were just minding their own business Wednesday when they were randomly attacked on Broad Street. Fortunately, one of the women was aware enough to realize trouble was headed her way, and she narrowly escaped a brutal attack. “He yelled at me that he was going to punch my face before he actually did it. So, thank God I kind of looked up and saw him coming,” Temple student Breland Moore said. Moore is a senior at Temple University, just 43 days away from graduation. She thought she’d made it all four years without incident, but that all changed at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. “So, I ducked and tried to run away as fast as I could,” Moore said. As rush hour traffic whizzed by, other students weren’t so lucky. The University says the man made his way south, down Broad Street and attacked two more women. The one girl was spit in the face. The other girl was knocked down and the suspect shoved her in the side of the building. |
