Teaneck police arrest 4, including blind man, in armed robbery scheme TEANECK — Police arrested four people, including a blind man, after two men were robbed of their cell phones and cash at gunpoint Tuesday night. The victims were waiting to meet a female acquaintance around 8:30 p.m. when they were approached by two men wearing masks that only covered the bottom halves of their faces. One of the men lifted his shirt to flash a handgun stuffed in his waistband, and threatened to shoot the victims if they tried to run. No shots were fired, but they eventually made off on foot with cash and each of the men's phones. When officers arrived on scene, the victims provided them with denoscriptions of each of their assailants, including that one appeared to be blind. "They based this assessment on the appearance of the actor's eyes and the manner in which he was being led around by the second actor," Wilson said. An investigation led detectives to a home on American Legion Drive, where suspects Andre Ziemoore, Marshall Harper and Ayesha Mitchell live. They watched as the trio, along with Jamila Eason of Englewood, hopped into a Ford Freestar minivan and drove to a nearby Stop & Shop supermarket. Once there, Ziemoore jumped out of the van and grabbed a plastic bag, which had been buried under a patch of snow beneath a tree, Wilson said. Police pulled them over as it left the parking lot, and received permission from Mitchell to search the van. Inside the plastic bag, they found the two cell phones that had been taken from the victims. |
Police arrest 2 in Towson mall robbery TOWSON, Md. - Baltimore County police arrested two men in connection with an armed robbery at the Towson Town Center. Damon King, 20, and Malik Smith, 17, are suspected of using a knife to rob a man in one of the mall’s bathrooms back on Nov. 22. But the incident did not end there. The victim retaliated. He chased the suspects down in the mall and wrestled one of them to the ground. The other suspect meanwhile pulled what appeared to be a handgun out of his bag, effectively ending the fight, allowing the two to run away. In the scuffle, Smith dropped his mobile phone, which was recovered by police. Investigators used the phone to track Smith down and make an arrest. Over the course of the investigation, it was also determined the “gun” used in the robbery was actually a BB gun, police said. King and Smith are charged with armed robbery. |

Coroner identifies shoplifting suspect shot and killed in Anderson ANDERSON, SC - Anderson police said they shot and killed a woman Friday night who shoplifted from Kohl's on Clemson Boulevard and led them on a chase. The coroner identified the woman as Sharon Rebecca McDowell, 49. "She ran from police and a chase ensued," Anderson County coroner Greg Shore said. "[Officers] got the car stopped and one of the other occupants of the car jumped out and ran, and the victim drove off again. She drove into a trailer park just outside the city of Anderson." Captain Tony Tilley said that trailer park was a dead end dirt driveway off Appleton Street. Tilley said the suspect still refused to get out of the vehicle. The suspect then rammed a patrol car and tried to run down two officers who were outside their vehicle, according to Tilley. "She backed her car into one patrol car and then she took off toward two officers that were on foot and that's when the shooting took place," Shore said. Shore said the two officers who were on foot fired shots at the suspect. The suspect crashed her car into a house a few seconds later, Shore said. Shore said McDowell was found dead at the scene. |

Woman sentenced to life in ’09 robbery and killing of SF man MARTINEZ, Calif. — A Pittsburg woman who shot and killed a 22-year-old San Francisco man after robbing him of his iPhone and cash in 2009 will spend the rest of her life in prison, a Contra Costa County Superior Court judge ruled Friday. Kiarra Price, 24, was sentenced during an emotional hearing in a Martinez courtroom packed with her relatives and some two-dozen family members of Benjamin Merrill, the young man she was convicted of killing. Her accomplice and former girlfriend, 24-year-old Teareney Brown, was sentenced during the same hearing today to 14 years and eight months in prison after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter, kidnapping and second-degree robbery. Merrill, a Washington state native living in San Francisco, had been stood up by a date and was walking through San Francisco's Mission District around 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 3, 2009, when Price and Brown, then 20, pulled up in a car, asked for directions and began chatting with him. Intoxicated, Merrill accepted their offer to party with them and got into their car, according to police and prosecutors. But instead of heading back to the home he shared with roommates, Merrill ended up in Pittsburg, where Price and Brown stopped to pick up a friend, then-21-year-old Kendra Fells, who brought a gun. A short time later, they all drove to a park near the Pittsburg marina where the women robbed Merrill of his iPhone and pocket cash. For unknown reasons, Price shot Merrill, fatally wounding him, and the three women fled the scene. - (Black-on-white) |

(Black) Attempted rape suspect Anthony Washington ordered to stand trial: (White) Student reveals details of attack EL CAJON, Calif. - A man accused of forcing an 18-year-old student into her car at knifepoint in a Grossmont College parking garage must stand trial on a charge of assault with intent to commit rape. The victim was leaning into her car shortly before 11:30 a.m. Oct. 22 at the western El Cajon campus when Anthony Jerome Washington Jr., 26, forced her into the vehicle. The victim, who was only identified as Melissa P., testified about her frightening ordeal in court on Wednesday. "He just kind of pushed me from my shoulders in and told me to get in the car," she said. Roth asked her about the terrifying moments when she came face-to-face with her attacker. When asked if she saw anything in the defendant's hands at the time, she responded, "A knife." When asked if she saw the knife before or after he pushed her, she answered, "I don't remember … as soon as I was like on my back, I saw the knife." Roth alleges that Washington had gone to the college with the specific purpose of "taking sex." "I was hearing voices to do bad things, to girls. To go get um, sex," he said. As the woman struggled to free herself, student Javier Partida was driving by in his car looking for a parking space when he saw what was happening. “Her legs were spread out under him,” he said on the witness stand. “I started honking my horn until I got a reaction.” That reaction was Washington walking away quickly. Partida helped the victim call for police. Deputies assigned to patrol the college then searched the campus, found a man matching the denoscription of the attacker nearby and took Washington into custody. When deputies arrested Washington, he had an 8-inch kitchen knife with a 4-inch blade inside his jacket. After being arrested, Washington allegedly confessed that he had planned to rape the student "and do whatever he had to in order to get his way." - (Black-on-white) |

(Black) Man Gets 110 Years For 2007 Murder Of (White) Store Clerk WAUKEGAN, Ill. – “Let me be clear, I intend that you spend the rest of your days in prison,” a Lake County judge said before sentencing a Wisconsin man to 110 years for the murder of a north suburban girl during a 2007 robbery. Montago Suggs convicted of killing 22-year-old Melinda “Mindy” Morrell during a robbery in Waukegan, was sentenced. In late September, a jury convicted Suggs, 29, of first-degree murder for shooting Morrell in the head during a May 21, 2007, robbery at the former Check ’n Go store. In a subsequent one-day bench trial, Suggs was also found guilty of attempted murder and armed robbery for pointing a gun at the head of a clerk and pulling the trigger at Ma & Pa’s Corner Store in Beach Park just five days after Morrell’s murder. Officials said the gun pointed at the clerk was loaded but no round was in the chamber, which likely saved the man’s life. Morrell’s mother, Sheryl Morrell read a statement to the court: “The person I love is gone, the life I have no longer exists, part of me is no more.” She added that her children, grandchildren and family have helped her realize she is still loved and needed. “I was with Mindy when she took her first breath, but he took her last,” Morrell said. “I will never forgive him for that.” - (Black-on-white) |
