(Black) Woman accused of carjacking (White) 88-year-old in Detroit to face trial A Wayne County judge announced Monday that the woman accused of carjacking and injuring an 88-year-old woman will go to trial. It was 2:30 in the afternoon of February 6th when 88-year-old Henrietta Kulberg was backing out of her driveway to go to the grocery story. When she tried to back up, she got stuck in the snow in the street. Then along came a seemingly Good Samaritan. "A person on a bicycle came along and offered to help me," she says. "She said i can get you out of there - you've got to rock it." Henrietta got into the passenger seat and 55-year-old Valerie Johnson got behind the wheel and got the car out of the snow. It was the start of an adventure with a stranger involving groceries, snow shoveling and, eventually, a Good-Samaritan-gone-bad back at Henrietta's home. "She pulled the door open and pushed me into the house," Henrietta says. "She started saying 'where's the money? Where's the money?' I was face down on the carpet and I said you're awfully strong for a woman - and she said I'm not a woman I'm a man." - (Black-on-white) |

Charges upgraded against black hit-and-run driver after (White) Ocoee girl, 10, dies OCOEE, Fla. — Ocoee police said they will not re-arrest a driver who struck two children who were riding their bikes home from school, even though the man's charges were just upgraded because one of the victims died. Lastevie Howard was taken into custody last month, but he was only charged with leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and was able to quickly bond out. Howard is facing an additional charge of leaving the scene of a crash with death after one of the victims, Aubrey Clark, 10, later died from her injuries after her family took her off life support. "Although these are more serious charges, the problem is there's no indication that this defendant is not going to appear for trial, and if that's so, you can't just arbitrarily raise the bond," said a legal analyst. The additional charge of vehicular homicide comes days after Aubrey was laid to rest. Howard is also facing another charge of leaving the scene of an accident with great bodily injury. "All that could add up to more prison time." - (Black-on-white) |

Homeowner Confronts, Detains Armed (black) Robber to Save Family LEXINTON, SC - What would you do if you opened a door in your home and saw the end of a shot gun? For one Midlands man, protecting his family was all that mattered. "I figure that's what any husband or father would do," David Platts said. Platts says he discovered a man crouched in his laundry room, pointing a shotgun directly at him early Saturday morning. He says he doesn't remember anything that went through his head before he lunged at the intruder...except for one thing. "The only thing I do remember was that I knew if he got past me, he was going to go after my wife and my daughter." Within seconds, Platts says he was able to pry the shotgun from the intruder's hands. "I called for my wife and she took the shotgun out of my hand," he said. Their daughter, 17 years old, was the one who called police while wife Carrie Platts held the shotgun at the intruder. They say he broke in through their doggy door. "When David had him on the floor he just kept staring at my daughter. and now when she closes her eyes at night that's all she sees," Carrie said. "We're all having trouble sleeping. we're having trouble just being here because you're been invaded. your home's been invaded. your privacy's been taken away." Unknown to the Platts family at the time, arrest warrants say the intruder Jahmand Mcneill, along with two accomplices, broke into a home down the street, locked a couple in their shower, and threatened to kill their three children. And even though Platts' quick thinking landed the three suspects in jail, he doesn't consider himself a hero. "I see where people are calling me a hero. to me, I'm not a hero. I did what a father and husband is supposed to do." - (Black-on-white) |

Black man gets 45-year sentence in 2012 fatal Anchorage stabbing of a White woman ANCHORAGE - A man convicted of fatally slashing a woman’s neck during a 2012 attempted robbery in Midtown Anchorage was sentenced to more than four decades in prison Friday morning. Edward K. Thomas, 53, has been charged with three counts of first-degree robbery and three counts of armed criminal action. The mother, Cheryl Christensen, agreed to tell her story if KCTV5 focused on the good that came after the vicious attack. She says her neighbors, church community and police did everything they could to help her family after she was violently assaulted. “I hunched over so that he wouldn't be able to aim at my belly,” Christensen said as she described the attack. “The first hit. He knocked out my eyesight. From the first blow it was really, really violent. Very painful.” Christensen says the attack happened on Dec. 13 when she went to check her mail. She saw a man urinating in public near her duplex where kids play and families park their cars. “I told him to use a bathroom because that is what they are for,” Christensen said. Police say Winzell E. Starr didn't like Christensen's scolding and rushed toward her. She told him she was seven months pregnant and tried to push him away from her belly. Police say that's when Starr began punching and kicking her. Christensen screamed for help. As she took blow after blow, she made sure to protect her unborn baby. Starr broke Christensen's nose in two places. Swelling from the beating caused temporary hearing loss and severe bruising. She had to get several stitches in her forehead. - (Black-on-white) |
Police: White man beat, robbed in Shelby Walmart parking lot by three black thugs SHELBY, N.C. — Police said surveillance video shows the moment when a man was attacked and robbed outside a Walmart in Shelby. That victim is recovering from a fractured skull and said he thinks he was targeted. Police are still looking for the man they believe hit Clay Wray so hard that the blow knocked him out as he left this Walmart. He fell on the ground and suffered a skull fracture. As he lay there, the thieves grabbed his money and left in a stolen car. He had just gotten his income tax money back and cashed his check. As he got money, the three assailants came into the store and got cash for cellphones at an automated machine. At some point, they saw Wray counting the $915 in cash as he left the store then they followed, waiting for the moment to strike. Police later pursued 18-year-old Christian Charles Campbell in this stolen car. A trooper rammed the car from behind forcing him off of N.C. Highway 74. He was arrested there and they later captured Tykee Romar Johnson. Warrants were issued for Robert Lamont Sutton of 128 Hillcrest Drive in Shelby. - (Black-on-white) |

Trial Opens With Mother's Account Of Finding Her (white) Daughter Beaten To Death (by black boyfriend) Linda Ducsay said she knew something was wrong when she returned home from work on May 19, 2006, to find an open gate and her dog still sitting in the yard. "I just had this feeling," Ducsay told jurors Tuesday in Superior Court at the start of the murder trial of Matthew Pugh, the man accused of killing Alexandra Ducsay, a 26-year-old bank systems analyst and aspiring actress. Linda Ducsay said she immediately went to her daughter's bedroom in the basement of their home in the Devon section of Milford. She said she saw drops of blood on the radiator baseboards. "I thought maybe she was hurt, maybe she hit her head," Ducsay said. But when she turned the corner and saw Alexandra lying on the floor covered in blood, Ducsay said she feared the worst. "My mind sort of split in two. One part of me..." Ducsay said, taking a long pause as she dabbed her eyes with a tissue. "...saw that she was as stiff as a board, her long blonde hair was caked in blood. I knew she was dead." ...blood was splattered on walls and floors, Ducsay's head was bashed in, and she was missing an eyeball. Ducsay testified that her daughter first met Pugh when she was a teen. She continued the relationship after he went to prison. She would visit Pugh in prison, bring him things and take his daily collect phone calls. - (Black-on-white) |

Black man choked and beat his white girlfriend to death The victim in Sioux Falls’ sixth homicide of last year was choked and beaten in her home. Timothy Darnell Moses, 39, was indicted on alternative counts of first- and second-degree murder and three counts of manslaughter in the Dec. 28 death of 36-year-old Angel Schroeder. A search warrant filed in the homicide investigation says Moses’ mother called police that morning to report that her son was threatening suicide by “telling the family goodbye” via text message. Moses answered the door bleeding from both wrists when officers arrived at the home he shared with Schroeder. He reportedly told police that his girlfriend was sleeping the bathroom, and officers found her on the floor, her head in the doorway and her feet propped up on the edge of the bath tub, “obviously deceased.” There was blood on the victim’s chest, shoulders, head and the floor. Police also spoke to the 13- and 11-year-old boys who’d been asleep in the basement and learned that the couple had been “fighting like crazy” the night before. One manslaughter charge accuses Moses of unintentionally killing a human being while committing the act of aggravated assault by causing serious bodily injury, another references killing during commission of aggravated assault by choking. Moses had been charged twice with aggravated assault by choking for alleged attacks on Schroeder and on a former roommate. If convicted of first-degree murder, he faces mandatory life in prison or death. Second-degree murder carries a penalty of mandatory life in prison, and manslaughter carries up to life. - (Black-on-white) |

Police credit DNA technology with cracking (black on White female) 1981 cold case Law enforcement officials are still not sure how the body of 17-year-old Carolyn Lee Andrew ended up in a shallow grave in Duluth’s Twin Ponds in 1981. They don’t know why the aspiring model was shot once in the right temple. They don’t know where she was in the hours leading up to her death. And they don’t know when her body was dumped in the popular swimming hole eight miles from her Woodland home. But nearly 34 years later, authorities believe they’ve finally determined the identity of her killer. Crediting advances in DNA technology, local and state officials said Monday that they’ve tied the homicide to Cecil Wayne Oliver, who died in 1988. While there was no apparent relationship between the two, investigators said it appears that Andrew encountered Oliver in a Superior bar the night before her disappearance. Carrie Andrew’s body was found facedown, partially submerged in Twin Ponds near Enger Park on May 6, 1981. She had died of a single small-caliber bullet to her head. And the night before her disappearance, they believe the two had an encounter at the Cove Bar in Superior. Witnesses who were there that night described a man named Cecil incessantly talking to Andrew and unsuccessfully attempting to get her phone number. - (Black-on-white) |

Lawyer: Political spat led to (black-on-white) Livonia slow cooker fight between 'friends' Livonia — A Detroit woman was ordered Thursday to stand trial in the killing of her friend beaten with a slow cooker after the two argued about politics. Tewana Sullivan, 50, who is charged with murder, cried at her preliminary hearing as she heard graphic details about the fatal Oct. 22 assault on Cheryl Livy, 66, with a kitchen appliance. Oakland County Medical Examiner Dr. Ljubisa Dragovic testified before Livonia District Judge Sean Kavanagh that Livy died of blunt force injuries to her head, face and mid-back. Livy also had defensive injuries to the back of her hands where it appears she tried to protect herself, Dragovic testified. Livy was discovered barely breathing with the cord of the "busted" slow cooker around her neck in her apartment around 10:45 p.m. at the McNamara Towers senior housing complex in the 19300 block of Purlingbrook, officer Thomas Blauvelt testified. Blauvelt said he found "blood all over the walls, all over the floor, all over the victim." "The Crockpot is busted over her head with the cord around her throat. She was barely breathing," he said. Black woman called "baby whisperer" sentenced for crushing the skull of a White child CINCINNATI —A Norwood daycare provider has been sentenced for the devastating abuse suffered by a boy in her care – all while maintaining her innocence in the case. Marie Abraham came into court Thursday to be sentenced for felony child endangering. She took the unusual step of entering an Alford plea in the case, which states that she admits prosecutors could convict her. It set the stage for a sentencing hearing that put the pain of her family, and the victim’s family on display. Cole Arata was in the care of Marie Abraham back in May 2012, when she ran a daycare from her home. Cole suffered severe head trauma that left him in the hospital for 144 days. His grandfather described his skull as “crushed.” Now Cole is four years old, paralyzed, on a feeding tube and unable to speak. Only the criminally perverse could forcibly crush the face of an ever-smiling and loving two-year-old child.” - (Black-on-white) |

Three of her four siblings were at the Tipperary Hill pub when Rebecca Spossey and Michael Morris arrived. White man living in fear after he was beaten and robbed outside store by pack of black thugs in racial hate crime CLEVELAND- A man was attacked and robbed outside a grocery store and it was caught on camera. Investigators said it was a hate crime. The I-Team obtained video of the September 25, 2014 attack that happened outside of a store on Woodland in Cleveland. The victim, Thomas McGill, 51, was punched, knocked to the ground, and kicked in the face and head, before one of the suspects reached inside his pocket and took his money. McGill suffered head and back injuries but said even worse, he is now living in fear. “I am paranoid to go anywhere,” McGill told the I-Team. “I am paranoid to even walk in this building.” McGill said he went to the store at 10 p.m. and when he was trying to pay for his items, one suspect started to take his money. He said he didn’t want to cause trouble so he kept his mouth shut, but then things got worse. “I just went outside the store and next thing I know I was in Charity Hospital,” McGill said. Police Union President Steve Loomis, who worked on the case, said the attack was very brutal and he believes money was not the main motivation behind the attack. “In this case, it was completely racially motivated,” Loomis said. “And what are you going to get out of the guy, just beat him up to beat him up or possibly kill him in the parking lot, for what?” The I-Team has learned that three of the men, Ronald Mango Jr., Montez Williams, and Steafon Hudson, have been indicted on several charges including aggravated robbery, felonious assault, and ethnic intimidation. A jury trial is scheduled for next week for the three men. Police are still searching for a fourth suspect. - (Black-on-white) |
