Black indicted for murder of White jewelry store manager A grand jury has indicted the suspect in the 2011 homicide of jewelry store manager Steve Toms not only for murder and armed robbery, but for joining four others in a criminal enterprise in violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. For Toms’ Nov. 15, 2011, fatal shooting in the Gold & Silver Trading Center Michael Jerome Johnson was indicted on two counts of felony murder for killing Toms, 63, while committing the felonies of armed robbery and aggravated assault. He also was indicted for the robbery and assault offenses and for using a firearm to commit a crime. In the same indictment the grand jurors included charges against Dimitrius Gordon, Sidney Person, Xavier Bell, Jockas Gilchrist and Theodore Alexander, who with Johnson are alleged to have planned and carried out a series of attempted or armed robberies around the city. The gunman found no one at the front counter when he entered the jewelry store, but someone in the back called out “Who’s there?” Toms peeked out and saw the gun, and tried to flee, but the robber caught him and brought him back to the front, where Toms opened the register and surrendered the cash. The robber then saw a ring on Toms’ finger and demanded it. When Toms refused and reached for a gun under the counter, the robber shot him several times, Johnson told Tyner. - (Black-on-white) |

(Black) teen up for 'shock probation' after four months of eight-year sentence - White victims are outraged RICHARDSON — Brittany Barton can't get the image out of her mind — a burglar in her bedroom in the middle of the night. A flashlight scanning the room startled her awake early one morning last September. As she nudged her fiancée to get up, Barton watched the intruder go through her dresser. He finally got spooked and sneaked out of the room when Barton’s fiancée, Jeremy Bay, asked "What?" to her insistent nudging. Police quickly caught the intruder, Brandon Jordan, 19. He’s a neighbor who was already on probation for theft when he was caught with cash, computers and a TV from Barton's home. "The chance of him getting to live right behind us again? 1 arrested, police search for 2 others after day-long crime spree - White female pistol-whipped and robbed March 27, 2014 - ATLANTA — An armed robbery spree that spanned three counties and lasted more than six hours came to an end Wednesday afternoon after police arrested a man considered to be a dangerous gang member. Two other suspects are still on the loose. A (White) mother of two came face to face with Brian Kennedy when he pistol whipped her and robbed. She said she thought he was going to kill her. "'I'm about to die,’ and that's what I thought," the woman said. The woman said she was still shaken up and emotional after being robbed of her purse and struck across the face with the gun. She said she literally looked down the barrel of a gun. "It’s a scary feeling to think that just for $15 you might not see the rest of your family," the woman said. Police think the man who put that fear in her is Kennedy. He was taken into custody by U.S. marshals Thursday. Police said that Kennedy went on a day-long crime spree with two other men, including robbing three people at gunpoint, after stealing a silver BMW from a DeKalb County gas station. U.S. marshals arrested Kennedy, who they say is a dangerous gang member suspected of rape, nearly a dozen carjackings, as many as six armed robberies. - (Black-on-white) |

'Run ... kick ... punch': Little (White) girl thwarts abduction attempt by black man PARKLAND, Wash. - A 6-year-old Parkland girl is safe today because of her smart, quick actions when two men tried to kidnap her in broad daylight in her own neighborhood. The drama unfolded Wednesday as the little girl, Savanna Norman, was walking home after playing and jumping on the trampoline at the home of her friend, 9-year-old Raquelle Pittenger, who lives right across the street. "I looked both ways, and there was no one coming but … then I went halfway across the street, two guys came out of nowhere," Savanna says. And what happened next is every parent's nightmare. "They grabbed me," says Savanna. But Savanna's smart moves made her mom very proud. "Run ... and kick ... and punch," says the little girl. "What's the No. 1 thing you did that got everybody's attention around the whole neighborhood?" asks Savanna's mom, Amy Norman. "I kicked him," says Savanna. "I screamed loud." This 6-year-old knows "stranger danger" well. "'Cause mommy teaches me," she says. Amy saw the attempted kidnapping from her front window, and dashed out the door. "My heart was pounding," she says. Meanwhile, her 9-year-old friend Raquelle watched from steps away. "It made me feel scared and terrible," she says. It was a dangerous situation - derailed by a smart little girl who remembered the right thing to do. "Very proud," says her mom. "What happened ... was very scary for all of us." Now the Normans are considering moving from their neighborhood - or at the very least putting a fence up around their house. The prime suspect, Jakeel Rashon Mason, was arrested and booked into the Pierce County Jail for investigation of unlawful imprisonment. He is being held on $150,000 bail. - (Black-on-white) |

Family speaks about Boyd murder case Although Katharina Lawn likely already knew, her daughters on Friday headed to the cemetery to visit their mother, and tell her that the man who killed her nearly seven years ago was finally convicted. A state Supreme Court jury found Darrell Boyd, 49, guilty in the brutal slaying of Lawn, his former neighbor, inside her apartment on April 20, 2007. Lawn's daughters - Tammy Pierson, April Northern and Holly Stevens, who both live in Texas - said they were "extremely happy" to hear jurors convict Boyd of second-degree murder. "It's been seven years," Northern said. "Unfortunately my mom wasn't (in court) to speak, but everyone was able to speak for her. We're grateful and feel like justice was served." Boyd, she said, won't be on the streets or able to hurt anyone else. Boyd fatally beat and strangled Lawn, 54, inside her apartment and set furniture on fire in an effort to conceal the crime, according to Assistant District Attorney Brian Green. He argued that Boyd was angry at Lawn for calling the police on him two years earlier during a domestic dispute, which resulted in Boyd spending more than a year in prison. - (Black-on-white) |

Naked black in cowboy hat enters Georgia home Police say a man was arrested after breaking into a home while wearing nothing but a cowboy hat in Johns Creek, Ga., on Monday. "They're like, what was he wearing? And I'm like, absolutely nothing... a cowboy hat," homeowner Cori Davenport said about the call she made to 911. She knew something was wrong after she heard her daughter scream in their home. Davenport came downstairs and found Ashdon Gibbs in her kitchen — completely in the buff. "Our garage was up, he came in through the garage and she was in the kitchen. He just walked in," she said. Police say he tried to steal a motorcycle from their driveway before coming inside, and the Davenport's surveillance cameras caught the whole thing. But that was just the end of Gibbs' day. Police say his alleged crime spree started when he stole a car Monday morning. It gets weirder from there. "The subject had driven a stolen vehicle that he had stolen from Decatur, burglarized two homes within the Prestwick subdivision and at some point took off all of his clothes," Lt. Byers said. "In one of the houses that he broke in to, he did consume a beer while he made himself a meal and watched baseball on their TV," said Byers. - (Black-on-white) |

According to police, two masked gunmen broke into the home of 76-year-old Jack Davis Jr. on Saturday night. The men killed Davis and shot a 64-year-old friend who was also at the home on Springfield Highway. The wounded man was rushed to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where he is expected to recover. "He was just selling, going to the auction, getting cars. And he'd set them out here in front of his house and sell two or three at a time," Woods said. The 64-year-old man wounded in the shooting was interviewed by detectives. He reported that two black men with their faces partially covered entered the home at 9 p.m. Saturday and demanded money before opening fire.
