(Black) teen up for 'shock probation' after four months of eight-year sentence - White victims are outraged
Brandon JordanBrittany BartonJeremy BayRICHARDSON — Brittany Barton can't get the image out of her mind — a burglar in her bedroom in the middle of the night. A flashlight scanning the room startled her awake early one morning last September. As she nudged her fiancée to get up, Barton watched the intruder go through her dresser. He finally got spooked and sneaked out of the room when Barton’s fiancée, Jeremy Bay, asked "What?" to her insistent nudging. Police quickly caught the intruder, Brandon Jordan, 19. He’s a neighbor who was already on probation for theft when he was caught with cash, computers and a TV from Barton's home. "The chance of him getting to live right behind us again? That's unreal," Barton said. It’s unsettling, too. But the couple is setting aside fear and returning to court to demand that Brandon Jordan face justice.- (Black-on-white)

  • Mugshot released for black 16-year-old accused of Trapuzzano murder
INDIANAPOLIS - Police Wednesday released the mugshot of the 16-year-old accused of killing an Indianapolis man while he out on his daily run. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) homicide detectives said 16-year-old Simeon Adams shot Nathan Trapuzzano a week ago on west 16th Street. They say that robbery was the motive. Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry charged Adams Tuesday as an adult with murder, felony attempted robbery and misdemeanor carrying a handgun without a license. He is expected to make his first court appearance Thursday morning. Speaking to the press Tuesday, IMPD Chief Rick Hite said police knew Adams from his alleged involvement in three prior incidents, including a gun store robbery on March 22 and a shooting on March 30. Adams has been moved to the Marion County Jail. He had been in the Juvenile Center while he recovered from his own gunshot wound he got a mere 17 hours after Trapuzzano was killed. "In some cases, as we talk about those cases where young people find themselves in harm's way, you often become the victim of the very crimes you commit," said Hite. Trapuzzano leaves behind a wife who is due to give birth to the couple's first child next month. A fundraiser site has raised more than %150,000 for his widow and unborn child.

Black man back on death row after escaping execution in 2003
Robert Ladd Vicki Ann GarnerTYLER, TX - An East Texas man who escaped execution 11 years ago is back on death row. 57-year-old Robert Ladd is awaiting the death penalty for murdering 38-year-old Vicki Ann Garner inside her Tyler apartment in 1996. He is accused of beating garner with a hammer then setting her body on fire. Ladd was set to be executed in 2003, but was granted a stay by claiming he was "mentally impaired". A Federal Appeals court rejected that claim on Tuesday. Garner's family says they just want to see justice served for Vicki. "We remember her every holiday, every family event. She's a big part of our lives and she always will be," says Teresa Wooten, Vicki's sister. Pictures and memories give Wooten strength. That strength was tested 11 years ago when Vicki's convicted killer got a second chance at life. "In 2003 I was driving my mom and dad to Huntsville when we got the phone call from the D.A.'s office that he had received a stay," Wooten says. Robert Ladd's execution was called off. Instead of heading to Huntsville, the Garner's game to KLTV for an emotional interview. "I thought today was going to end it all and I got a little mad," said Gene Garner, Vicki's dad. "I don't think that we'll ever find closure," said Wooten. Vicki's family continued to fight. Now, her sister's are moving forward alone. - (Black-on-white)

Savanna Normanblack kidnapperPARKLAND, Wash. - A 6-year-old Parkland girl is safe today because of her smart, quick actions when two men tried to kidnap her in broad daylight in her own neighborhood. The drama unfolded Wednesday as the little girl, Savanna Norman, was walking home after playing and jumping on the trampoline at the home of her friend, 9-year-old Raquelle Pittenger, who lives right across the street. "I looked both ways, and there was no one coming but … then I went halfway across the street, two guys came out of nowhere," Savanna says. And what happened next is every parent's nightmare. "They grabbed me," says Savanna. But Savanna's smart moves made her mom very proud. "Run ... and kick ... and punch," says the little girl. "What's the No. 1 thing you did that got everybody's attention around the whole neighborhood?" asks Savanna's mom, Amy Norman. "I kicked him," says Savanna. "I screamed loud." This 6-year-old knows "stranger danger" well. "'Cause mommy teaches me," she says. Amy saw the attempted kidnapping from her front window, and dashed out the door. "My heart was pounding," she says. Meanwhile, her 9-year-old friend Raquelle watched from steps away. "It made me feel scared and terrible," she says. It was a dangerous situation - derailed by a smart little girl who remembered the right thing to do. "Very proud," says her mom. "What happened ... was very scary for all of us." Now the Normans are considering moving from their neighborhood - or at the very least putting a fence up around their house. The prime suspect, Jakeel Rashon Mason, was arrested and booked into the Pierce County Jail for investigation of unlawful imprisonment. He is being held on $150,000 bail. - (Black-on-white)

Family speaks about Boyd murder case
Darrell BoydKatharina LawnAlthough Katharina Lawn likely already knew, her daughters on Friday headed to the cemetery to visit their mother, and tell her that the man who killed her nearly seven years ago was finally convicted. A state Supreme Court jury found Darrell Boyd, 49, guilty in the brutal slaying of Lawn, his former neighbor, inside her apartment on April 20, 2007. Lawn's daughters - Tammy Pierson, April Northern and Holly Stevens, who both live in Texas - said they were "extremely happy" to hear jurors convict Boyd of second-degree murder. "It's been seven years," Northern said. "Unfortunately my mom wasn't (in court) to speak, but everyone was able to speak for her. We're grateful and feel like justice was served." Boyd, she said, won't be on the streets or able to hurt anyone else. Boyd fatally beat and strangled Lawn, 54, inside her apartment and set furniture on fire in an effort to conceal the crime, according to Assistant District Attorney Brian Green. He argued that Boyd was angry at Lawn for calling the police on him two years earlier during a domestic dispute, which resulted in Boyd spending more than a year in prison. - (Black-on-white)

The Granger Township man is recovering from a gunshot wound to the stomach after he was shot Friday outside the Mustard Seed Market in Bath Township. “It was as if someone folded you in half,” Heben, 44, said Wednesday. He said he exchanged words with the car’s driver. “I said, ‘Dude, you almost [expletive] ran me over — you need to pay attention to what you are doing,’ ” Heben said he told the man.     Naked black in cowboy hat enters Georgia home
Ashdon GibbsCori Davenport Police say a man was arrested after breaking into a home while wearing nothing but a cowboy hat in Johns Creek, Ga., on Monday. "They're like, what was he wearing? And I'm like, absolutely nothing... a cowboy hat," homeowner Cori Davenport said about the call she made to 911. She knew something was wrong after she heard her daughter scream in their home. Davenport came downstairs and found Ashdon Gibbs in her kitchen — completely in the buff. "Our garage was up, he came in through the garage and she was in the kitchen. He just walked in," she said. Police say he tried to steal a motorcycle from their driveway before coming inside, and the Davenport's surveillance cameras caught the whole thing. But that was just the end of Gibbs' day. Police say his alleged crime spree started when he stole a car Monday morning. It gets weirder from there. "The subject had driven a stolen vehicle that he had stolen from Decatur, burglarized two homes within the Prestwick subdivision and at some point took off all of his clothes," Lt. Byers said. "In one of the houses that he broke in to, he did consume a beer while he made himself a meal and watched baseball on their TV," said Byers. - (Black-on-white)

According to police, two masked gunmen broke into the home of 76-year-old Jack Davis Jr. on Saturday night. The men killed Davis and shot a 64-year-old friend who was also at the home on Springfield Highway. The wounded man was rushed to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where he is expected to recover. Police say the two intruders demanded money from the victims before they opened fire. The pair got away in a light colored pickup truck, possibly an older model with a square front end. Davis was known to conduct business at his home, including buying and selling vehicles. "He was a great man. He was a wonderful man," said Anthony Woods, who worked for Davis. "He helped a lot of people and kept a lot of people in work." Some question whether the well-known businessman may have been targeted by someone who knew him, possibly someone looking to buy a car. "He was just selling, going to the auction, getting cars. And he'd set them out here in front of his house and sell two or three at a time," Woods said. The 64-year-old man wounded in the shooting was interviewed by detectives. He reported that two black men with their faces partially covered entered the home at 9 p.m. Saturday and demanded money before opening fire. Police said the assailants may have fled the area in an older model pickup truck with a square front end. black lockroom attackerDavid Egan LILBURN, Ga. — A Gwinnett County high school student is recovering at home after an attack at school sent him to the hospital. Daniel Egan said his son is getting Facebook threats after a brutal beating in a locker room at Parkview High School. His son, David Egan, had to get reconstructive surgery on his face because of the beating. David Egan said this was not a fight, he was sucker punched and cellphone video proves that. The video shows a student punching David Egan, 16, in the face and throwing him into a locker. He was hospitalized for four days. “The swelling has gone down a lot since the hospital, since I’ve iced it a lot, since I’ve been taking good care of it,” David Egan said. Daniel Egan said the incident may be over, but there is not enough distance between his son and the school. “He’s gotten some nasty Facebook messages, which we’re ignoring,” Daniel Egan said. - (Black-on-white)
