Ex-convict James Cooke Jr. was convicted this morning in the rape and strangulation of Lindsey Bonistall, a college student from White Plains. The jury of eight men and four women found Cooke guilty of first-degree murder and other felonies related to the Bonistall slaying and two other home invasions in Newark, Del., in the spring of 2005. Jurors rejected defense claims that Cooke was mentally ill. Bonistall, 20, was a sophomore at the University of Delaware when Cooke broke into her off-campus apartment and killed her early on May 1, 2005. She was a 2003 graduate of Good Counsel Academy in White Plains. A black man who took hostages in a bar and told the patrons that "white people are going to burn tonight"
was convicted Thursday of attempted murder, assault and other crimes. AIDS-infected Steven Johnson, 39, showed no emotion after the jury, which deliberated a week, found him guilty of more than 50 crimes, some of them designated hate crimes that are punished more severely than other offenses. Johnson invaded Bar Veloce, in Manhattan'sEast Village area, while nine men and six women were inside early June 16, 2002. He was carrying three pistols, a samurai sword and a container of kerosene. He warned, "White people are going to burn tonight." He later told police he left the housing project in Brooklyn where he lived and took a subway train to the East Village, where he looked for "happy" white people to avenge the mistreatment of black people. He shot and wounded three people, including a police officer, and sprayed kerosene on several customers and threatened to set them on fire. Two women caught Johnson off guard and tackled him, and a policeman shot him. Sentencing was set for March 21.

Ronnie Long went to prison for life in 1976 after a Concord jury ruled the 20-year-old black man raped a prominent white woman at knifepoint. It was eyewitness testimony from the victim -- the 54-year-old widow of a Concord textile executive -- that swayed the all-white jury. She had "no doubt whatsoever," she said, Long was the man.
Racial tension in Concord also complicated the case. Blacks were already angry about the shooting of a black youth by a white store clerk. The selection of an all-white jury in Long's trial increased the divide. To enter the courthouse, jurors passed protesters and the courtroom was packed, with whites seated behind the victim, and blacks behind Long. The verdict sparked riots with chants of "Free Ronnie Long." But the case withstood two appeals. The accuser says she danced with suspect Michael Burch, 21, before going into the bathroom. The warrant says Burch followed, forced the accuser to the floor. She says she struck her head on the way down. The warrant says the woman was sexually assaulted while on the floor. As the accuser left the bathroom in tears she was helped by a friend. She was taken to a car outside the Gattis Street duplex.

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A jury convicted a man of second-degree domestic assault on Saturday for shoving a cell phone down his girlfriend's throat. Prosecutors said Marlon Brando Gill, 25, of Kansas City, forced the cell phone into Melinda Abell's mouth during an argument in December 2005. Gill denied the charge, claiming that she tried to swallow the phone to prevent him from finding out whom she had been calling. 8 arrested in 1971 cop-killing tied to Black Panthers
SAN FRANCISCO - Eight men with ties to a militant black power group were arrested today in the brazen 1971 killing of a San Francisco policeman, part of what authorities described as a five-year campaign to assassinate law enforcement officers in California and New York. Most of the men were former members of the Black Liberation Army, a violent offshoot of the Black Panther Party, according to police. On Aug. 29, 1971, two members of the group, armed with guns and dynamite, stormed a police station and fired a shotgun through a hole in the lobby s bulletproof glass, killing Sgt. John V. Young, 51, and wounding a civilian clerk. Authorities said the killing was one in a series of attacks by BLA members on law enforcement officials on both coasts.   Two men convicted of killing two NYPD officers 35 years ago were arrested again Tuesday, this time in connection with the death of a San Francisco police sergeant at around the same time. Police say Herman Bell (left) and Anthony Bottom were arrested in prison. The two stand accused of murdering Sergeant John Young back in August of 1971. Young was shot during a raid at his police station, just three months after NYPD officers Waverly Jones and Joseph Piagentini were shot to death in East Harlem. Both Bell and Bottom are serving life sentences for the killings. Six others, including a man from Queens, are also charged in Young's death.   Three decades after members of the Black Liberation Army stormed the Ingleside police station in San Francisco and killed a sergeant, historic arrests have been made in the case. In the early morning hours of January 23, 2007, multi-agency task forces across the country brought down most of the members police say were involved in the Ingleside attack. Suspected BLA members were arrested in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Panama City, Florida. Six arrests were made and two men who were already serving time in a New York state prison were charged. While police and the FBI are calling the raids that occured almost simultaneously in three states a massive victory, the manhunt continues for one man -- suspected getaway driver Ronald Bridgeforth. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A fourth person was arrested Friday in connection with the killing of a young man, whose burned corpse was found dumped along railroad tracks, and the death of his date, who was kept alive for days and raped. All four feral Negroes were being held on federal charge. Two were arrested in Knoxville and the other two in Lebanon, Ky. The victims, Christopher Newsom, 23, and Channon Christian, a 21-year-old University of Tennessee student, were last seen Saturday night while on a date.

The two had been at a friend's apartment and had left to get something to eat, with the plan of then going to another friend's home to watch movies. They never arrived. Newsom's body was found the next day. He had been shot and his body set on fire along a rail line. His girlfriend's vehicle was found nearby. "The second victim, they kept her for a couple of days and brutally raped and sexually assaulted her." "Then they killed her and dumped her body." Eric DeWayne Boyd, 34, arrested in Knoxville Thursday night, was charged with being an accessory after the fact in a carjacking. Lemaricus Davidson, 25, arrested the same day, was charged with federal counts of carjacking, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of a firearm in a crime of violence. Davidson had been released in August from a Tennessee prison after serving five years for carjacking and aggravated robbery.
