Deportation's revolving door: (Black) Suspects in Lawrence shooting shouldn't have been in U.S. Deportation orders failed to oust two illegal immigrants who are now up on drug charges and under investigation in the July 4 shooting death of a Lawrence grandmother — in an alarming case that critics say illustrates a revolving immigration door with dangerous consequences. Dominican Republic nationals Wilton Lara-Calmona and Jose M. Lara-Mejia were arrested on drug charges by police investigating the shooting death of Mirta Rivera, 41. The Lawrence nurse was killed in her sleep by a gunshot fired through the ceiling from an upstairs apartment, where both men lived. But Immigration and Customs Enforcement records reviewed by the Herald show the men shouldn’t have been in the country in the first place. Lara-Calmona, 38, was deported in April 2012 and arrested for re-entering the country last November, the records show. Lara-Mejia, 35, was nabbed crossing the border in August 2013 and ordered deported in April 2014, but had remained in the country illegally. (Pictured) Jose Lara-Mejia, 35, left, Wilton Lara-Calmona, 38, and Christopher Paganmoux, 23 who all live on the second floor above Rivera on Exchange Street, were charged with trafficking heroin and cocaine after police said they found drugs as well as a “clear and obvious” rifle bullet hole in Lara-Mejia’s second-floor bedroom. - (Drudge) |

The assault left her with post-traumatic stress disorder and a multitude of other ills. "I have constant nightmares of fighting him off of me," she said. The 34-year-old victim told prosecutors she had returned to her apartment in April 2014 from her job at a Capitol Hill bar. She was drunk and struggled to get her keys in the door. Apparently watching her was 38-year-old Anthony Hawkins, a career criminal with 86 arrests and nearly 40 convictions. He came up behind her and attacked. The assault was captured on videotape. Judge: Teen's role in sex-trafficking ring 'sickening and disgusting' LANSING – An Ingham County judge called a Lansing teen's role in a sex-trafficking ring "sickening" before sentencing her this morning to at least four years in prison. Mariah Haughton, 17, pleaded guilty to human trafficking and transporting of a female for prostitution last month. Several other charges were dropped as part of her plea agreement, among them human trafficking, child sexually abusive commercial activity and prostitution. Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Joyce Draganchuk sentenced Haughton, who will turn 18 later this month, to four to 20 years on both counts. She will serve the sentences at the same time. "Make no mistake about it, this offense is sickening," Draganchuk told Haughton. "It's sickening and disgusting." The sex-trafficking ring operated between March and July 2014, and involved girls who were then ages 14 to 18. Witnesses earlier testified that Haughton was mostly responsible for taking their photos, posting them on Backpage.com and scheduling customers. Haughton recruited girls on the street and at a juvenile center to work as prostitutes, according to court documents. |

(Black 'cold-blooded killer') to be executed for 2005 murder of (White) 93-year-old woman HUNTSVILLE, Texas - A death-row inmate convicted of fatally beating and stabbing a 93-year-old woman during a robbery at her Texas home is facing execution without any last-minute court appeals. Clifton Lamar Williams is set to die Thursday evening for the 2005 slaying of Cecelia Schneider in Tyler. Firefighters responding to a call about smoke coming from her house found her body. Investigators determined her body and bed had been set on fire after she'd been killed. Prosecutors allege Williams broke into her home to get money for cocaine. He was arrested a week after the killing, after investigators found his blood and fingerprints in the woman's car, which had been found wrecked and abandoned. If the execution is carried out, the 31-year-old Williams would be the 10th Texas prisoner executed this year. - (Black-on-white) |
