  • Parents claim Jewish all-boys school covered up decades of homosexual abuse
Former principal George Finkelstein (left) and ex-teacher Rabbi Macy Gordon (right) in 1970. He lost a lawsuit against Yeshiva University’s prestigious all-boys school involving alleged decades-long homo sex abuse — so his parents are now trying to make an end-run at justice. In what their lawyer calls a first-of-its-kind move in the state, Israel and Chaya Gutman are set to file a lawsuit Monday claiming that the embattled Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy in Manhattan is guilty of deceptive advertising by touting the high school as a safe place to send youths. According to the Manhattan Supreme Court suit, “Most savvy Jewish educational consumers… would have never imagined that [the school], despite its glowing and positive impressions, would have permitted their son to endure an educational experience… that was consistently threatened, and often stained, by known sexual predators in high positions of authority.” Two rabbis were allowed to leave quietly after students accused them of sex abuse. The Gutmans claim their son in the early 1980s was sexually abused by Rabbi George Finkelstein, a former principal, and Richard Andron, a former university student and friend of Finkelstein who was allowed to roam freely in the school’s hallways and dorms. Besides Finkelstein and Andron, other ex-students have alleged being raped by Rabbi Macy Gordon, a former teacher. His alleged dirty deeds include sodomizing one victim with a toothbrush covered in toothpaste during a violent attack in a school dorm room.

(Mixed-race Mexican-white) Former Alabama Death Row inmate cuts deal, free after 15 years in prison
William ZieglerO'Della Wilson, William Ziegler's motherA former Death Row inmate Alabama who won a new trial three years ago is free after cutting a deal with prosecutors, becoming the second condemned prisoner in the state ordered freed this month. William Ziegler, 39, had been awaiting execution since his conviction in 2001 for the slaying of Russell Allen Baker near the defendant's home at the time in Mobile County. His regular appeals exhausted, he won a rarely successful post-appeal challenge made directly to the trial judge. On Thursday, Ziegler accepted a plea bargain that allowed him to walk free. He pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting murder, and Mobile County Circuit Judge Sarah Stewart sentenced him to the 15 years and 50 days he has been incarcerated. O'Della Wilson, the defendant's mother, said she is happy that will go free but angry that he had to pleaded guilty to any crime. Meanwhile, Baker's family made clear it does not accept the outcome. "He's a menace to our society. He will be back," said Beth Johansen, the victim's aunt. "This is not justice for our nephew."

  • William Ziegler convicted of capital murder for 2001 killing of Russell Baker
  • Murder victim's family speaks out against alleged killer's retrial
William Ziegler, 39, was convicted in 2001 of brutally stabbing and nearly decapitating 19-year-old Russell Allen Baker, Jr. and was sentenced to death. The family is also disturbed by the thought that Ziegler has a slight chance to be granted bond. "This boy (Ziegler) stabbed my nephew 103 countable times, and then tried to decapitate him," said Baker's aunt, Mary Johansen. "Does he need a bond? No he sure don't."
  • Prosecutors argued that Ziegler was the ringleader of a foursome that took part in the killing.
When asked why she felt pressure to testify, she said she was upset that her 12-year-old daughter was pregnant, and Baker was the father. She said she feared her daughter would be taken away by authorities. James Gordon Bennett III also pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Patricia Renee Davis pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was handed a 10-year sentence, although a judge ordered she serve only three years. According to testimony, the four defendants, Baker, and two girls, ages 16 and 14, attended a party at Ziegler's Peach Place Inn apartment in west Mobile on the night of Feb. 19, 2000. Witnesses testified that Ziegler, Randall, Davis and Bennett swarmed in on Baker, terrorizing and torturing the victim over the next few hours. Davis testified she hit Baker in the head several times with a golf club.
  • Convicted killer's brutal childhood part of penalty plea - 3/9/01
Prosecutors sought the death penalty because of the heinous crime. John Ziegler said his nephew, known as "Willie John," was raised by another aunt and uncle. The abusive uncle, Jerry "Bink" Wilson, would hit the boy with a 2-by-4 board, a five-foot rope with knots in it, curse him and calling him racially derogatory names, according to testimony. Clinical psychologist James Chudy said William Ziegler's absent father was Mexican, but Ziegler exhibited a lot of "shame-based anger" because people had used a racial slur for blacks against him. Awaiting trial in the slaying are James Gordon Bennett III, 19; Ziegler's cousin, William Alexander Randall II, 18; and Ziegler's girlfriend, Patricia Renee Davis, 24, all of Mobile County.

Black Somali migrant that killed White U.S. citizern during armed robbery shot in shootout with police
Ahmed Hassan MuminEric SchadeEric SchadeCITY HEIGHTS — The investigation into a deadly convenience store robbery ended early Saturday with a police shootout in City Heights that left the suspect wounded, San Diego police said. Ahmed Hassan Mumin, 30, of San Diego was taken to a hospital and is expected to be booked into jail on charges of murder, armed robbery and attempted murder of two police officers. Officers were investigating the Thursday robbery of a Clairemont Arco am/pm station that left a customer dead when they encountered the suspect early Saturday. Several officers began a search of the Bandar Salaam apartment complex, and at 2:50 a.m. two officers prepared to search a community room there. As the detectives approached the door, the suspect began shooting through the door, narrowly missing both officers. The detectives both returned fire, and at least one round struck Mumin in the torso, police said. Speaking in Somali through a friend, 83-year-old resident Ugaso Elmi said she heard the shots and knew immediately they were gunfire. A man by the same name was interviewed by federal authorities in 2009 at the Philadelphia International Airport after arriving from Somalia, via Djibouti and London, according to a 2010 U.S. Homeland Security threat assessment report for the San Diego area. A naturalized U.S. citizen, he told authorities had been in Somalia caring for his ailing grandmother until her death. He told authorities that a family member knows a man who recruits for al-Shabab, the Somali terrorist organization, in the San Diego area. City Heights is home to a thriving Somali community, one of the largest in the United States. 95 percent of the community’s occupants are Somali immigrants who practice the Muslim faith. - (Black-on-white)

(Black) Novi man's 6 month jail for killing a (White) cyclist challenged as too lenient
Tommy TaylorTimothy TaciePORT HURON - A prosecutor says a one-year jail sentence given to a Novi man who was drunk when his car hit and killed a bicyclist is too lenient. St. Clair County Prosecutor Mike Wendling said his office is appealing Tommy Taylor's sentence. Taylor, 38, was sentenced to only one year in the county jail and 5 years of probation in the death of 41-year-old Timothy Tacie. "We felt the sentence was too lenient given the facts of the case, and the damage caused and the death of the individual," Wendling said. Police said Taylor was driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.175 when he struck and killed Tacie, who was riding his bicycle. That's more than twice the level at which a person can be arrested for drunken driving. Taylor was convicted in February of operating while intoxicated causing death, a 15-year felony. During Taylor's sentencing, St. Clair County Circuit Judge Cynthia Lane departed from sentencing guidelines — which recommended a minimum of two years, five months in prison — and sentenced Taylor to five years of probation and one year in the county jail, with the possibility of work release in six months. Wendling said the reasons given at sentencing were not sufficient to depart from the guideline range. "After discussions with the father of the victim, we were willing to pursue an appeal," Wendling said. - (Black-on-white)

Black 'monster' condemned for slaying of (White) Arlington pastor and a (White) inmate - loses appeal
Steven LaWayne Nelson Jonathan HoldenJudy ElliotClint DobsonHOUSTON The state's top criminal appeals court has upheld the conviction of Steven LaWayne Nelson, sent to death row for the beating and suffocation of a young pastor during a robbery at a North Texas church four years ago. Attorneys for the 28-year-old Nelson contended there were 15 errors at his 2012 trial in Fort Worth for the slaying of Clint Dobson, pastor at NorthPointe Baptist Church in Arlington, and near fatal beating of Judy Elliott, the church secretary. The appeals court Wednesday rejected arguments that evidence wasn't sufficient to convict him of capital murder and sentence him to death, that the jury selection and jury instructions were improper and that text message evidence improperly was allowed. The court also rejected constitutional claims raised against the Texas death penalty. - (Black-on-white)
