Detectives had believed that Zaleski knew her killer because friends said she never liked to open her door for anyone she didn't know. Byrd, 39, has been named a person of interest in the homicide investigation of Cheryl Gilberg. A prenoscription amphetamine pill bottle prescribed to Gilberg was found alongside prenoscriptions belonging to Byrd during the home search. Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney said the medical examiner ruled that Gilberg died from "homicidal firearm violence to the head." Mahoney said there was a history of domestic violence at the home, and that Gilberg filed for a restraining order last week. Court records show she filed it against a former or current live-in boyfriend, and it was scheduled to go to court Wednesday. Mahoney wouldn't say if that man is being questioned. Byrd was not the man Gilberg filed a temporary restraining order against, and was not involved in an alleged December domestic violence incident. |

Supreme Court looks at case of Freddie Lee Hall, Florida death row inmate with low IQ A Floridian with an IQ as high as 75 may be diagnosed as mentally disabled and be eligible for help getting a job. But on death row, the state says having an IQ higher than 70 categorically means an inmate is not mentally disabled and may be executed. The Supreme Court barred states from executing mentally disabled inmates in 2002, but until now has left the determination of who is mentally disabled to the states. In arguments Monday, 68-year-old Florida inmate Freddie Lee Hall is challenging the state's use of a rigid IQ cutoff to determine mental disability. He was sentenced to death for murdering Karol Hurst, a 21-year-old pregnant woman who was abducted leaving a Florida grocery store in 1978. Hall also has been convicted of killing a sheriff's deputy and has been imprisoned for the past 35 years. He earlier served a prison term for assault with intent to commit rape and was out on parole when he killed Hurst. Hall's guilt is not at issue. - (Black-on-white) |

Sheriff: Second black suspect in fatal LaPlace shooting of White man turns himself in LAPLACE, La. – The man believed to be the triggerman in a shooting at a LaPlace animal feed store that left a man dead and his wife injured turned himself to the U.S. Marshalls Fugitive Task Force at noon Thursday after arranging to do so through his attorney, Sheriff Mike Tregre said. The move by Charles Mcquarter III, 22, came less than 12 hours after the first suspect did the same thing. Dracier Dewey, 22, surrendered to police early Thursday morning. In his confession, Tregre said Dewey named Mcquarter as the gunman. He is charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery and a parole violation. He is being held without bond. Mcquarter was arrested in 2012 on second-degree murder and weapons charges. It was not immediately clear what came of that arrest since Mcquarter was not in prison. Store owner Steven Finckbeiner was fatally shot and his wife, Constance, was injured in the robbery. Dewey was arrested and booked with principal to armed robbery, principal to first-degree murder and principal to attempted first-degree murder. Surveillance video showed two men leaving the feed store shortly after the shooting. A man in a red jacket appears first, then the other shows up carrying what looks like a cash register. - (Black-on-white) |

Black man punches (White) people in face, runs to getaway car AMES, Iowa —Ames police are investigating multiple reports of a man randomly punching people in the face. Two assaults were reported on the same day, Feb. 16. The people reported to police that a man punched them in the face in two separate incidents. Tony Behnke relives the moments before he was attacked in the early hours of Feb. 16. It was sometime after 3:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Stanton Avenue in Ames. "About halfway down the block a guy got out of a car and started following me down the street," said Behnke. "He followed me pretty closely. It always sounded like he was increasing pace. It kept scaring me." The Iowa State sophomore slowed down and tried to let the man pass him. "I heard him just right behind me and I heard a couple steps and then I felt the hit to my side and I was on the ground," said Behnke. Before he could get up, the man had run away. "After he hit me, him and his buddies just started laughing -- got in the car. He didn't steal anything, nothing like that, but it just seemed like a joke to them," said Behnke. What Behnke didn't realize was minutes before another man was also assaulted at the intersection of Hayward Avenue and Knapp Street. That man suffered a broken jaw. Behnke said he suffered a concussion. Sean White said another attack happened to his friend just this past Saturday night, but the friend was lucky. "He got out of the car and just run up and and he kind of punched, but he slipped on the ice as he punched him," said White. Behnke said he is confident his attack was part of what is called the "knockout game," which are crimes reported across the USA where suspects attempt to knock out or sucker punch a victim. Ames police can't confirm that the incidents are related to a knockout game, but they can say they're similar. "It's still very scary. I can't walk home at night without thinking about it," said Hehnke. Police said the man involved was a black male about 6 feet tall with dreadlocks that might have had yellow or highlighted tips. - (Black-on-white) |
