Sheriff: Second black suspect in fatal LaPlace shooting of White man turns himself in LAPLACE, La. – The man believed to be the triggerman in a shooting at a LaPlace animal feed store that left a man dead and his wife injured turned himself to the U.S. Marshalls Fugitive Task Force at noon Thursday after arranging to do so through his attorney, Sheriff Mike Tregre said. The move by Charles Mcquarter III, 22, came less than 12 hours after the first suspect did the same thing. Dracier Dewey, 22, surrendered to police early Thursday morning. In his confession, Tregre said Dewey named Mcquarter as the gunman. He is charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery and a parole violation. He is being held without bond. Mcquarter was arrested in 2012 on second-degree murder and weapons charges. It was not immediately clear what came of that arrest since Mcquarter was not in prison. Store owner Steven Finckbeiner was fatally shot and his wife, Constance, was injured in the robbery. Dewey was arrested and booked with principal to armed robbery, principal to first-degree murder and principal to attempted first-degree murder. Surveillance video showed two men leaving the feed store shortly after the shooting. Black man punches (White) people in face, runs to getaway car AMES, Iowa —Ames police are investigating multiple reports of a man randomly punching people in the face. Two assaults were reported on the same day, Feb. 16. The people reported to police that a man punched them in the face in two separate incidents. Tony Behnke relives the moments before he was attacked in the early hours of Feb. 16. It was sometime after 3:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Stanton Avenue in Ames. "About halfway down the block a guy got out of a car and started following me down the street," said Behnke. "He followed me pretty closely. It always sounded like he was increasing pace. It kept scaring me." The Iowa State sophomore slowed down and tried to let the man pass him. "I heard him just right behind me and I heard a couple steps and then I felt the hit to my side and I was on the ground," said Behnke. Before he could get up, the man had run away. "After he hit me, him and his buddies just started laughing -- got in the car. He didn't steal anything, nothing like that, but it just seemed like a joke to them," said Behnke. What Behnke didn't realize was minutes before another man was also assaulted at the intersection of Hayward Avenue and Knapp Street. That man suffered a broken jaw. Behnke said he suffered a concussion. Sean White said another attack happened to his friend just this past Saturday night, but the friend was lucky. "He got out of the car and just run up and and he kind of punched, but he slipped on the ice as he punched him," said White. Behnke said he is confident his attack was part of what is called the "knockout game," which are crimes reported across the USA where suspects attempt to knock out or sucker punch a victim. Ames police can't confirm that the incidents are related to a knockout game, but they can say they're similar. "It's still very scary. I can't walk home at night without thinking about it," said Hehnke. Police said the man involved was a black male about 6 feet tall with dreadlocks that might have had yellow or highlighted tips. - (Black-on-white) |

Ohio State University issues alert to watch for black suspect in January rape Ohio State University police have issued a campus alert after a student was raped in her dorm room and the suspected assailant came looking for her weeks later. OSU Police Chief Paul Denton said the woman and the suspect went to her room in Baker Hall East early on Jan. 25 and the man raped her. After he left, residence-hall staff members became aware of what happened and called police. The woman could not identify the rapist. Denton said he didn’t know how or where they met. In this case, we don’t know who he is.” He would not say when or what happened when the man was spotted again at the dorm. In the alert, police described the man as a “continuing threat.” “We’d like to get the person identified,” Denton said. “We’d like to talk to him, and we’d like to warn others.” The rapist has been described as a black man between 5 feet 4 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall, 18 to 20 years old, with short black hair and a “wide” build. He has a pockmarked complexion and scars over most of his face, including possibly a scar over an eyebrow. |

Local minister sentenced after HIV scandal CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. - An Atlanta area minister was sentenced to ten years in prison by a Clayton County judge on Friday. Craig Davis had denied everything: the sex outside his marriage and even his positive HIV status -- until now. However, this week, a Clayton County jury convicted him on two counts of Reckless HIV, which is a felony. In his sentence hearing, one of the church women who says she had sex with Davis told the judge that she's "the one serving a life sentence." In the hearing, the prosecutor painted Davis as "unrepentant" and when it comes to unprotected sex, unstoppable. But the hearing took a turn right before the sentence was handed down -- Davis took the stand in a last minute plea for mercy. The pastor confessed that he was HIV and that he had engaged in unprotected sex without telling the women of his status. He also confessed that he believed his actions were "wrong." |

A former actress claims she didn't know her husband murdered the 27-year-old mother of his two young children until he pushed her to help hide the body parts more than a week later. Amanda Hayes, 41, took the stand in her defense, saying she only agreed to help hide the chopped up body parts of Laura Jean Ackerson when her husband Grant threatened to kill her as well. But prosecutors said Hayes never tried to expose her husband's heinous act, and even seemed happy in pictures taken after they disposed of the body . More than that, they say the couple planned the murder after a troubled custody battle over Grant's two young sons with Ackerson. Hayes is facing charges of first-degree murder and accessory after the fact for the July 2011 death. Her husband Grant was convicted last year of murder and is currently serving a life sentence. - (Black-on-white) |

Baton Rouge police arrest two teens in beating death Baton Rouge police arrested two teens Tuesday accused in the fatal Feb. 1 attack of a 55-year-old Indiana native, a crime that might have been committed simply because the teens wanted to see who hit harder. John Bannon, 1654 Clear Lake Lane, Baton Rouge, died Friday of injuries sustained when he fell onto the concrete sidewalk during the attack, fractured his skull and suffered a brain hemorrhage, according to the arrest warrant for Windall Lavel Herring. Bannon’s death leaves his family wondering why a man they described as a compassionate and caring individual was targeted. “You just want to know why, why him,” said Susan Smith, Bannon’s sister, who resides in Nashville, Tenn. on Wednesday afternoon, choking back tears. “Why him, of all people, (who) didn’t bother anybody.” Police think the two teens, Herring, 19, and a 15-year-old whose name was not released, attacked Bannon in an attempted robbery, to see who could hit harder or possibly for another reason, police spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said. - (Black-on-white) |

Brothers Were Shot And Killed Before Their House Was Set On Fire (Corinth, MS) A man is being held in the deaths of two brothers found inside their burned home in Corinth, Miss. Investigators say the two brothers, 66-year old James Copeland and 64-year old Jerry Copeland, had each been shot in the head before their house was set on fire. The fire was reported the morning of February 13th. Corinth police say the murders and arson were allegedly an act of revenge by 28-year-old Sirdon Greer. The tragic deaths of the Copelands was hard enough to handle, but details on why they died has left neighbors in shock. In 2011, Vietnam veteran James Copeland shared with reporters his joy of being reunited with a daughter he fathered while serving in the war. “I’m glad that I was able to find her and we got the future to look forward to,” James Copeland said in 2011. But two-and-a-half-years later, the 66-year old man’s hopes have come to a tragic end. Thursday morning, he and his younger brother Jerry were found dead in the ashes of their Corinth home... Police say the fire was no accident. They took 28-year-old Sirdon Greer into custody and plan to charge him with two counts of murder and arson. Police allege Greer wanted revenge for a domestic situation involving Greer’s wife and Jerry Copeland’s son. Police said the two men were each shot in the head and died before the fire was set. - (Black-on-white) |
