Brooklyn group of black youths blocks white couple's car, bloody victims in racial attack: cops Authorities say Ronald and Alana Russo were pummeled by attackers — ranging in age from 12 to 18 — who showered them with racial slurs. A pack of 10 black youths — one of them a 12-year-old girl — surrounded a white couple's car in Brooklyn, viciously beating the husband and yanking the wife to the pavement by her hair as they peppered the two with racial slurs, authorities said. “Get those crackers!” some of them screamed, according to court papers. “Get that white whore!” The confrontation erupted about 7 p.m. Monday, as the marauding group crossed Avenue U at E. 58th St. near Kings Plaza Shopping Center in Mill Basin. Ronald Russo, 30, and his wife, Alanna, apparently had the green light and the husband honked at the group to get out of the way. The rowdy kids started kicking the car. Ronald Russo got out to check on potential damage to his vehicle. And that’s when all hell broke loose. Ronald Russo was dragged to the ground. Then he was punched and kicked in the head. He felt more blows all over his body, investigators said. He suffered a fractured nose, a broken septum, a blood clot and abrasions to his shoulder. In the midst of the attack, there was a steady chorus of epithets. “White motherf-----!” screamed the attackers, who ranged in age from 12 to 18. Alanna Russo, 30, was calling 911 when the 12-year-old girl pulled the woman’s hair and threw her to the ground. The victim’s head slammed into the concrete. She suffered a black eye, bleeding and difficulty breathing, prosecutors said, but she refused medical attention. Her husband’s iPhone was stolen during the melee, according to cops. The kids scattered after the brazen attack. But two teens, Kashawn Kirton and Daehrell Finch, were arrested at a nearby Lowe’s store parking lot minutes afterward. - (Black-on-white) |

Memories of murder - After 26 years gruesome black-on-white killings are back in the news The news that a federal judge has ordered a new trial for a former Chico State student convicted in 1989 of the murders of a prominent Chico physician and his wife has stirred up memories of one of the most gruesome and racially charged cases in the city’s modern history. In January 1987, Dr. William and Katherine Chiapella, who were then 68 and 67 years old, respectively, were found in their home by their son, Joseph, also a physician. Both had been bound, gagged and stabbed multiple times and bludgeoned about the head with a fire extinguisher. There was evidence they had been tortured before being killed. And, in a manner reminiscent of the Manson killings, the assailant had written a message in lipstick on two bathroom mirrors: “Just the beginning,” it read. Five days later, Chico police arrested Steven Edward Crittenden, a 19-year-old whom the Chiapellas had hired three months earlier through the university to do part-time yard work around their house, though apparently he had never shown up. The Chiapellas were white, well-to-do and prominent members of the Chico community. Crittenden was a 6-foot-4-inch black man with a shaved head, an outsider who had come here to play football at the university. When Crittenden was arrested, another photographer, Ty Barbour, caught the suspect’s white girlfriend crying as a cop led him away. - (Black-on-white) |

Metro-East police searching for black suspect who attacked female gas station clerk Metro-East Police are looking for a man who beat up a gas station worker for cash and the crime was caught on tape. Police in Cahokia said the suspect punched the station clerk multiple times in the head. The victim, Kathleen Jacobs, said she doesn’t feel safe with her attacker on the streets but she will continue to work her overnight shifts. “I really don’t like doing this,” Jacobs said, “But it’s a job.” Jacobs has three small children and has to work at the BP Station on Camp Jackson Road to make ends meet and is disgusted with the actions of her attacker. “It’s kind of repulsive actually,” said Jacobs, “That you would see a man, if he wants to call himself that, beat down this small woman.” Inside the BP Station store is designed to protect Jacob as she sits in a secure room to serve customers, but on Wednesday night, Jacobs forgot to lock the door after refilling the ice. That is when police said the suspect noticed the door unlocked. - (Black-on-white) |
Jury: Black Gary deviant guilty in brutal rape and murder of White woman who gave him a ride home Lake Superior Court jurors convicted a Gary man of felony murder and other charges in the beating death of a Griffith woman who befriended a stranger by giving him a ride home. Robert Lewis III, 40, was convicted of murder, murder in perpetration of criminal deviate conduct, criminal deviate conduct and resisting law enforcement in the beating and strangulation death of Jennifer Kocsis, 37. Kocsis paid the ultimate price for her willingness to help a stranger in need. At about 2 a.m. April 2, 2011, Kocsis and Lewis left Pepe’s Restaurant in Griffith, where Kocsis had gone to sing karaoke. Seven hours later, Kocsis’ badly beaten, partially clothed body was found behind the shuttered Riley School, 1301 E. 43rd Ave., Gary. Lewis had propositioned women in the restaurant bar before he left with Kocsis, witnesses said. The attack began inside Kocsis’ Chevrolet Malibu — her broken glasses and blood were found inside the car. Legally blind in one eye, Kocsis got out of the car and was thrown up against it, based on evidence that included a piece of her tooth that adhered to the outside of her car. The assault continued, with her knees and hands scraped and cut as she fought for her life. Lewis is 6 foot 1 and 260 pounds, and Kocsis was 5 feet 5 and 133 pounds. A shoe print impression was left on her bloody arm. Evidence showed Lewis’ DNA was found on the steering wheel of Kocsis’ car, and his DNA was also present on an anal swab collected during her autopsy. - (Black-on-white) |
