DA believes race played factor in Josh Brent probationary sentence Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins believes the probationary sentence given to former Dallas Cowboy Josh Brent for intoxication manslaughter was affected by a recent Tarrant County case in which a white 16-year-old was sentenced to probation by a judge for killing four people while driving drunk. The defendant in that case, Ethan Crouch, told a judge he suffered from “affluenza” because he grew up wealthy and suffered no consequences for his actions. Watkins told a radio station that the Brent jurors — five blacks, four whites and three Hispanics — “factored that into the equation” in reaching their decision in January. Brent, who is black, grew up poor and played football at the University of Illinois before becoming a defensive lineman for the Cowboys. He retired last summer. |

Missouri executes black man for jeweler's 1991 death The 56-year-old had been convicted of killing Stephen Honickman and badly injuring his wife, Florence, during a robbery at their jewelry shop in suburban St. Louis on July 27, 1991. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In 1991, Herbert Smulls called jeweler Stephen Honickman and set up an appointment to meet at his store in suburban St. Louis. He said he wanted to buy a diamond for his fiancee. It was a set up. Smulls wanted to rob the store and took along a 15-year-old friend to help commit what became a far worse crime: Honickman was shot to death. Honickman's wife, Florence, was also shot, but survived by faking death in a pool of her own blood until the assailants left. Late Wednesday night, Smulls was put to death with a lethal dose of pentobarbital. Florence Honickman spoke to the media after the execution, flanked by her adult son and daughter. She questioned why it took 22 years of appeals before Smulls was put to death. Make no mistake, the long, winding and painful road leading up to this day has been a travesty of justice," she said. - (Black-on-white) |
