Trial date set for alleged shooter in Marley Lion murder The trial for the man accused of fatally shooting 17-year-old Marley Lion in a West Ashley parking lot last summer is scheduled to begin later this fall. Ryan Deleston (2nd from left), 32, is charged with murder, attempted armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, and possession of a handgun with an obliterated serial number in connection with the July 16, 2011 incident. Investigators say Deleston, Julius Brown (left), and Bryan Rivers (3rd from left) planned on robbing the Famous Joe's bar at 1662 Savannah Highway, but targeted Lion instead when they found him sleeping in his SUV in the parking lot. Lion was recently graduated from Academic Magnet High School and was set to enroll at Clemson University in the fall. Police said after targeting Deleston as a suspect in the shooting, they used a confidential informant to purchase a handgun from Deleston on July 15. Through ballistic tests, officials were able to confirm the pistol was the weapon used to kill Marley Lion. Julius Brown pleaded guilty earlier this month to lesser charges in exchange for his cooperation with authorities during the investigation. A fourth suspect, George Brown (right), was charged as an accessory after the fact. - (Black-on-white) |

Juror, witness Facebook exchange imperils Tennessee murder conviction A Tennessee juror's laudatory Facebook message to a medical examiner during a murder trial could nullify the jury's conviction of William Darelle Smith, the state's Supreme Court ruled Wednesday. The high court did not immediately throw out the first-degree murder conviction of Smith, who was sentenced to life in prison in 2010. But in concluding the trial judge erred upon learning of the juror's social networking communication with a key prosecution witness, state justices unanimously decided a new trial may be necessary unless the state proves the juror shouldn't have been disqualified. A county grand jury indicted Smith in the death of Zurisaday Villanueva, whose body was found June 4, 2007, off a Nashville road along with two .9 millimeter shell casings. The two had been living together, according to court documents. |

Jury being picked in rape trial of pimp also accused in Strip slayings Jury selection will continue today in the sexual assault trial of a self-proclaimed pimp who also faces first-degree murder charges in the deaths of three people in a Strip shooting earlier this year. The case languished in the courts until it was dropped because authorities could no longer find the woman. After the Strip shooting, she was found and testified to the grand jury. |
