(White) Family fighting to keep 1-year-old son’s (black) killer behind bars
Vaughn MathisTom HackeMary Beth HackeRyan HackeWEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — A local couple whose son was shot and killed outside a gas station in 1997 is fighting to keep their 1-year-old’s killer behind bars. “You just wonder what life would be like, because he was such a joy,” Mary Beth Hacke said of her murdered son, Ryan Hacke. “He was smiling all the time.” After doing so in 2014, Ryan’s parents are again requesting that their son’s convicted killer stay in prison. At 14 months old in January 1997, Ryan was struck by a bullet in the eye and died days later. His parents were switching cars near a Homestead gas station when Vaughn Mathis unloaded a semi-automatic pistol. A jury convicted Mathis of involuntary manslaughter in Ryan’s death, well below a charge of first-degree homicide, which prosecutors were seeking. “We will go in front of the parole board, and put our hearts on the table and say Ryan Hacke's life mattered,” Mary Beth Hacke said. This month, Mathis is again eligible for parole. He served a minimum sentence not only doing time for Ryan’s killing, but also for raping a woman. The Hackes want him in jail for the full sentence of 43 years. “I grieve every day of my life for my precious Ryan. I'll always woner what life would have been like with Ryan here,” Mary Beth Hacke said. A hearing for Mathis is set for March 17. The Hackes continue to work as hard as they can to have parole denied and keep him locked up. So far, the family has gathered 1,200 signatures in favor of having Mathis’ parole denied. • Ghost hunters discover body of missing (White) woman at haunted hospital - two blacks in custody - June 30, 2015
VICKSBURG, Miss. - A team of ghost hunters found the body of a missing woman on Sunday as they explored the old Kuhn Memorial State Hospital in Vicksburg, a site known to be one of Mississippi's most haunted. Sharon Wilson, 69, appeared to have trauma to her head. Witnesses said her body was found outside Kuhn Hospital, but blood trails indicated she had been inside. Two men, Akeem McCloud, 20, and Rafael McCloud, 33, have been taken into custody. (They were driving a car stolen from the victim.) It appears at one point Wilson was inside the ('ghost') hospital and was taken outside. "You could tell where they had dragged someone down from the second floor in the middle of the building, to a grassy area on the left side of the hospital," he said. "On the steps, that's where most of the blood was, and it looked like they dragged her all the way to the grassy area." Police said the McClouds told authorities they had put Wilson out on the side of the road after robbing her home and kidnapping her on Saturday. - (Black-on-white)

Philadelphia Man Faces Retrial in 1991 Rape, Slaying of 77-Year-Old Neighbor
Anthony Wright A man whose conviction in the rape and murder of an elderly woman in north Philadelphia a quarter-century ago was overturned due to DNA evidence is facing a retrial in the case. Forty-four-year-old Anthony Wright was sentenced to life without parole in the October 1991 slaying of 77-year-old Louise Talley, his neighbor in the Nicetown neighborhood. The conviction was reversed two years ago after DNA evidence pointed to another man. Prosecutors will argue in the retrial that Wright didn't act alone but was in the home when Talley was assaulted and stabbed 10 times. Defense attorneys have argued in pretrial filings that other evidence should be barred because it was tainted by improper police conduct and witnesses have died since the 1993 trial.

Officials released half of the people arrested citing video evidence that cleared them of being the aggressors. As of Sunday night, they said they weren’t holding any of the KKK members. Police believe they were all acting in self defense. Police charged several of the protesters with elder abuse because they repeatedly stomped one of the KKK members who was over 65-year-of age. A juvenile counter-protester who was arrested and released Saturday was re-arrested, police said, after new video surfaced.
