Ponder, a Navy veteran, had been on the state police force less than a year. "He was trying to help them out, and for an unknown reason, the driver fled," Thomas said. • Jewish chicken-slaughter ritual gets OK from judge
All’s fair when it comes to slaughtering fowl on the streets of Brooklyn, a judge ruled Monday, clearing the way for thousands of chickens to be killed next week in a 2,000-year-old ritual. “The Kaporos ritual . . . involves the practitioners’ grasping of live chickens by their wings and swinging them above their heads three times and reciting prayers. “The purpose of this act is to transfer the practitioner’s sins to the birds. After swinging the bird, the adherents slit the chickens’ throats with a sharp knife. The meat is then donated to the poor,” papers state.

(Native American) Inmate who raped Arizona prison teacher gets life in prison
Jacob HarveyFLORENCE - An Arizona inmate who pleaded guilty to raping a prison teacher apologized to the woman in court Monday before being sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars. Jacob Harvey's apology came after the teacher's attorney read a lengthy statement from her describing how the January 2014 rape had traumatized her and led to what she called "unwanted psychological reactions, unwanted memories and psychological distress." The 35-year-old woman sat with her parents in the courtroom while her attorney read her words. "At one point after the rape I wished inmate Harvey had just killed me because death seemed like a relief compared to the hell I was living," her statement said. She asked Pinal County Superior Court Judge Kevin White to give Harvey the harshest possible sentence.

  • Bernie Sanders Makes an Unlikely Bible-Themed Pitch to Evangelicals
The morning began with Sanders, a 73-year-old non-observant Jew, standing awkwardly on stage as a Christian rock band belted out a song about Jesus, and ended with Sanders looking on as the students sat in silent prayer. In between, he read passages from the bible (Matthew 7:12, aka the Golden rule; and Amos 5:24, “But let justice roll down like waters…”), and quoted Pope Francis comparing capitalist greed to idolatry of the golden calf to make his political case to a crowd that was polite but clearly skeptical. “I want all of you, if you would, to put this in the context of the Bible, not me,” Sanders said. He opened his speech by acknowledging the obvious areas of disagreement between himself and the religious conservatives in the crowd. “I believe in women’s rights, and the right of the women to control her own body,” he said, drawing only scattered applause from students who are required by the school to attend such weekly meetings. “I believe in gay rights and gay marriage. Those are my views and it is no secret.”

Man spots estranged stepfather, suspect in 1999 slaying, calls police
Jerome LawrenceThe last time Willie Britton saw his stepfather Jerome Lawrence, the year was 1999, and Lawrence was being arrested on a domestic battery charge for beating Britton's mother. Within a month of that arrest, police were interviewing Britton and his mother about Lawrence in connection with a far more gruesome crime — the slaying and home invasion of Far Northwest Side resident Marjorie Collette. Lawrence escaped from an Arkansas jail before he could be charged and managed to elude authorities despite multiple arrests in Florida. Sixteen years later, Britton, now 32, who has had nightmares about seeing his stepfather again, relived one of his worst fears as he walked past Lawrence on Friday. When Lawrence walked into the Cook County Circuit Court courtroom, he stared into the sparsely occupied gallery, where Collette's niece, Judy Beavis, was seated. Lawrence and another man had been doing remodeling work on Collette's house in the Edison Park neighborhood in the days before the 65-year-old was found dead in her bed by another niece May 21, 1999. The suspect is accused of smothering Collette with her pillow, slitting her dog's throat for barking and making off with a bag full of her electronics and a safe.

Police arrest black for committing 'pure torture' on one and may be linked to six 'missing or murdered' Ohio mothers
Ernest 'Dollar Bill' MooreFelony charges have been filed against a man accused of torturing a victim with silverware heated on a stove and other instruments. Police also claim that Ernest 'Dollar Bill' Moore, 39, may be able to shed some light on the murders and disappearance of six women in Ross County, Ohio. He turned himself in on Thursday night after the Missing Women's Task Force issued a warrant for his arrest nationwide. On Friday he was indicted on charges of felonious assault and kidnapping. Police Chief Keith Washburn called the kidnap incident 'pure torture', after the victim was 'punched, kicked, assaulted with a broom, possibly raped with the broom, and burned with lighter fluid, silverware heated from the stove and boiling hot water.' The male victim told police that he went to Moore's house to buy drugs and was immediately bound with Duct tape and placed inside a duffel bag to be transported to another house. Investigators also say they believe Moore could have information on the disappearances and deaths of six Ross County women in the last 16 months. Police believe that Moore knew all of the women - and that all six knew each other in some capacity.

Repeat rapist to be released because he’s not crazy enough
Jerome ArpsA repeat sex offender who is so dangerous that a state psychologist believes he will likely strike again is about to be set free over the objections of the judge in his case because of a little-noticed state high court ruling. Jerome Arps — who raped a woman on the steps of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in 2006 — had been locked up under rules that allowed sex fiends to be jailed after their release date if they are a danger to the public. But a 2014 ruling by the state Court of Appeals has changed those rules. Now, pervs who serve their maximum jail time can be held only if they have a mental problem that is more serious than just a personality disorder. Arps, 58, doesn’t meet this standard — so he technically qualifies for release. Experts, however, fear that he’s still a danger to the public and that it will only be a matter of time before he rapes again if he is freed. Arps — whose offenses date back to when he helped gang-rape a 14-year-old when he was a minor — was still dangerous.

black mobHARRISBURG- A large group of juveniles "savagely assaulted" two Newville brothers who had visited the city to watch fireworks at the Kipona festival. The victims, ages 16 and 19, were jumped near Third and Walnut streets as they walked to their vehicle after the fireworks ended Sunday night, Carter said. The younger brother suffered a possible broken jaw, he said. The older brother tried to shield his younger brother from the attack and suffered bruising and swelling, he said. The victims were able to run away from the group of attackers, who represented an overwhelming threat because of their sheer number, Carter said. The beatdown also had a "racial overtone," to it, Carter said. He said the attackers, who were black, yelled racial comments at the white victims, who had been "minding their own business." The attackers could be the same group that went on a wilding in midtown Saturday night, jumping on cars, smashing vehicle mirrors and ransacking a convenience store, Carter said. - (Black-on-white)

Hispanic friends filmed ‘cold and callous’ killing of roommate on a cellphone, police say
Dionicio Gutierrez-Salazar, Francisco Alvarez and Alexis Eduardo Garcia-JimenezIt began as a verbal argument between roommates that escalated to violence: one man was repeatedly stabbed with a knife, a killing that was captured on video, and then his body was burned in an almond orchard, according to the Merced County Sheriff’s Department in California. The ex-girlfriend of one of the housemates went to authorities on Tuesday and told them she had seen cellphone footage of the killing, Merced Sgt. Delray Shelton said. Investigators searched the roommates’ house and found “blood splatter and other evidence” that “led them to believe that there was some sort of major crime that had been committed,” Shelton said. Authorities arrested three men on Wednesday: Dionicio Gutierrez-Salazar, 36, Francisco Alvarez, 24 and Alexis Eduardo Garcia-Jimenez, 19. They are awaiting arraignment on first degree murder charges. Attorney information was not immediately available, and police aren’t releasing the identity of the victim.
