Isaac Jones III Found Guilty Of Second-Degree Murder * Murder conviction seen as compromise
A jury from Nashville found Isaac Jones III guilty of second-degree murder in the slaying of Chattanooga Police Officer Julie Jacks. The state had sought a first-degree murder conviction and the death penalty for Jones. Jones faces a sentence of 20-25 years. The Jacks family seemed stunned by the verdict. The defense had contended that Jones was mentally ill at the time of the slaying of Officer Jacks on May 6, 2002. Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin's former son-in-law, wanted on charges of cocaine trafficking, was arrested
in California after seven months on the run, authorities said. In his possession, officials found a valid driver's license under someone else's name. In the house where he was staying, they recovered more than 200 pounds of cocaine, 100 pounds of marijuana and as much as $1.5 million in cash, authorities said. Defense lawyer Mitch Moran, who admitted that he had never had a trial lasting over two days, focused entirely on hair-splitting, such as had a death-certificate been entered or a document signed, while co-counsel James McIntyre asked Communist witnesses simply if they "knew" Killen.
